@banhxiupaotft yeah I was surprised by how similar their underlying stories were. and I see myself in that as well. I suspect meant people will resonate with their stories. congrats btw for earning a spot in tpc next set!

@LearningTFT For me, someone who has spent almost three years pursuing competitive TFT, grinding through countless tournaments, and recently earned a spot in the TPC set 17 (for the first time), I see a part of myself somewhere in their stories.

@LearningTFT Their sharing, thoughts, and perspectives truly motivate me to keep trying and improving. Thank you for hosting these Pro chats; the way you ask questions and think about TFT and life is really great.

lilbear quit tft in set 14, got a job, and came back. then, he won set 16 APAC regionals. we talked about what inspired him to compete, performance under pressure, and how he's still not sure if the journey has been worth it. youtu.be/NEZtx8uhuYg

@watanabe_kai_ big vouch! I've participated in both project mentr and project pbe. kai has built amazing products/experiences/communities that benefit everyone. would be huge win for entire TFT community for kai to have more resources to leverage his ideas and energy.

Just applied! If PROJECT PBE has ever been useful to you and you think my hand in the TFT esports space would benefit the community, I would appreciate any vouches on this one But if you think you'd be a good fit, apply! imo TFT has a ton of qualified people for this role

@xavleague yeah that's part of the motivation behind what I'm building with tft dojo. a practice/training environment to get reps in without the lp baggage.

@LearningTFT depends on the title, for traditional sports its a lot easier to opt into a practice environment, whereas esports is a lot harder cause practice is practically the same as matches

question to myself: if losing feels like shit and winning doesn't fix it, grinding harder isn't the answer. so what're you actually trying to do?

@xavleague yeah. the metric is irrelevant. LP, tournament wins, job title, net worth. same trap, different scoreboard. curious if you’ve thought about what a different motivation structure looks like for your players. one that isn’t built on the external ladder.

@LearningTFT for most games, you can end up using rank and LP as external validation. Then losses feel personal, and wins only feel like temporary relief. for esports specifically, your practice being tied to a number (LP) doesn’t feel like real practice

@LearningTFT @149centimeters I tend to think human motivations to be not that far removed from gregarious primates. We want someone to scratch our back, but we have cooler words for it: Validation, Service, Legacy... from the troop.

@149centimeters perhaps not. perhaps that's enough. to what degree do you feel you're living a fulfilling life? is that what you're optimizing for when you play TFT?

@LearningTFT I mean if it brings you fulfilment does it need to lead you to anything else?

@maldtoohard "as contentment comes from within" hits hard for me. shifting from external goals to internal ones is easier said than done in a world the massively rewards the external ones.

@LearningTFT I don't want to get too into the weeds as I could ramble. But I guess my general thought is: +/- EV can be extrapolated to "does this move me closer or further to my goals", so next question is "what do I want? (goal)" &it's OK to pick any option, as contentment comes from within

@149centimeters I sometimes wonder...to what end does continuous improvement, learning and growth lead me? 🧐

@LearningTFT Sometimes results are the only facet we have on our improvement but it doesn’t mean improvements are not happening, believe in the process and eventually your efforts will come into fruition

@maldtoohard or bigger picture, it may be +ev to be very deliberate in studying & improving at the game you're playing if your goal is to win a tourney & improve long-term, but it may be -ev if that causes you to burnout and your whole point in playing the game was to have fun.

@maldtoohard for example, it may be +ev to play a line you're comfortable with to get the best placement in the game you're playing rn, but that may be -ev if you're prepping for a tourney and want to practice alternate lines.

@maldtoohard I guess what I'm trying to say is that if an action is +/- ev within the framework of the outcome, then what happens when you get to the outcome you want but still don't feel good about it?

Learning TFT@LearningTFT·
@maldtoohard I see. the question then becomes what're you getting out of the action? cause if you're doing the action primarily to get to the outcome, it still eventually runs into the same problem.
