@meowsternator I think we can, if we’re describing a British person, i.e. “Piers Morgan is a wanker”.

Can I use “wanker” as an American or is that appropriation of British culture

Yes, it’s hard to describe how much so. Some universal things you’ll notice everywhere: Infrastructure is much better, consistently, especially power grid. Outages are rare, usually weather-related, and brief. Traffic is busy, sometimes congested, but generally very orderly. It’ll take you a little bit to catch on to who expects a tip and how much, things like that.

@Lefty_Kitty That's something I've been noticing more and more. Americans keep talking about how completely different Texas, New York, California, the Midwest, and the South are from each other.

We’ve done a lot of research on the big things, weather, schools, crime, natural disasters, red/blue states, but there are so many small everyday things we still don’t fully understand. What’s one thing about daily American life that you think every newcomer should know? Or… what’s something that surprised you about American culture, even if you grew up in the USA? Things like: - Grocery stores & food culture - Friendships and community - Church life and Sunday routines - Healthcare, doctors, insurance - Small talk, manners, or social norms - Holidays, seasons, or family traditions We’re still in South Africa waiting on our flight, but we want to arrive prepared and respectful of our new home. Drop your honest answers below, the good, the surprising, and the practical. I'm reading every comment and taking notes! 📝 Who knows… we might become neighbours one day 😊❤️🇿🇦➡️🇺🇸

Do you believe in signs from God? Have you ever experienced one yourself? This is how our journey truly began… On 6 February 2025 my husband was cleaning his bakkie when he found a US dime inside. The coin clearly said “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST”. We had never seen it before and had no idea how it got there. The very next day, 7 February, President Trump signed Executive Order 14204. My husband saw it on X and immediately felt the dime was a clear sign from God. We prayed deeply about it because his brother, who had a stroke the year before and needed full-time care wouldn't be able to leave. Then on 8 February, his brother suddenly passed away in hospital while the whole family was praying around him. It was heartbreaking… but we knew in that moment God had answered our prayers and opened the door. His brother was now safe with the Lord, free from all pain and suffering. We sent our email of interest to PRM as soon as it was released, and in February 2026 we had our first contact. We are still here in South Africa, waiting on our refugee flight in the next 2–4 weeks, standing in complete awe at how God has guided every single step. Thank you for walking through this miracle with us.

@EGANSgrammie @Zayin_7_119 Garage sales as well. The advantage to thrift stores is that they’re open whenever you want to go, you don’t have to wait for opportunity. The myriad things needful to run a “starter” residence: spoons, towels, basic furniture, etc. are all available there cheaply.

This video came at exactly the right time… 😭🙏 The waiting has been really heavy today. It’s been over a week since our tentative travel email and we still haven’t heard anything about cultural orientation. We don’t know the exact date or even which city we’re going to. Packing feels almost impossible right now, what do we keep and what do we get rid off when we have no idea when we’re leaving or what the weather will be like? Some moments we’re excited, other moments the uncertainty weighs heavy. But this powerful reminder to take that first step of faith even when the path isn’t clear… it strengthened my heart again. We will keep trusting God and walking forward when He opens the door. God bless the USA. ❤️🇺🇸

This powerful video “The Walk” from UFC Freedom 250 hit hard tonight. A man must still stand ready — even when the path ahead isn’t fully clear. We’re still in South Africa waiting on God’s exact timing, but when the call comes we will walk forward with courage like the pioneers we are. Link to the video in the comments below 👇 God bless the USA. ❤️🇿🇦➡️🇺🇸

You shouldn't be upset at the fact that so many people are imprisoned. You should be upset that we've created a society that enables the basest, most vile people imaginable, leading them to commit crimes that gets them put in prison. The increasing prison population is a direct indicator that our society is fundamentally broken. The solution isn't trying to control the number of people in prison. The solution is to return to a society that makes committing crimes much more unthinkable.

@DAaronovitch @GoodwinMJ Run a single sheet of paper to the appeals court, bring it back marked: “lol, no.” And then take him out in front of the courthouse and hang him. Leave him hanging 24hrs.

@GoodwinMJ What do you think, 20 years on death row and then lethal injection? Electric chair? Firing squad? Or given your trajectory, mob breaking into prison and lynching him? And why him in particular?

@monsterhunter45 My first human found me living outside, in the freezing rain, with no food. He picked me up and brought me indoors, even though I bit and clawed and fought. It’s weird that humans doing this for other humans is seen as cruelty.

This dipshit actually screen capped that as proof of my “hate”. 😀 Liberals are stupid. Suicidal empathy for criminals is not kindness. It’s cruelty to their victims. The real question is why do they hate the law abiding men, women, and children who have to live with that shit?

I've seen this clip (but not the whole movie/tv show it comes from) and it's interesting. It almost gets it right. "Comanche" comes from kɨmantsi, which was the name the Ute had for us. The Spanish heard that and changed it to "Comanche". The name itself means "enemy" or "anyone who wants to fight me". We call ourselves Nʉmʉnʉʉ, which translates to "the people" or "the human beings".
James Michael@RealJayMikes

@Lawton_Braves “Do you know what Comanche means? It means enemies forever." "Enemies with who?" "Everyone." "You know what that makes me?" "An enemy." “No. It makes me a Comanche." Fun dialogue exchange in Hell or High Water

It’s also totally impractical. We can’t even keep people in literal prisons from getting and using knives. Imagine how much like a prison you’d have to make your country to stop someone who wants one from getting/using a knife. We’re talking about one of the most basic tools known to man. A cave man could make a knife from a literal rock.

@Lefty_Kitty @PoliticalStacy People are so dumb. They make the disingenuous UK argument against knives. An object is not evil. A person is. I’ve carried a knife for literal decades and never used it improperly.
