I am from a city called Jarash. Today, itโs insignificant, a decaying, forgotten place. But once, it was Jarasa, a thriving Greco-Roman city, a hub of trade, knowledge, and culture. Egypt, the land of the Pharaohs, of monumental architecture, of one of the greatest empires in history, was reduced to a province of a 7th-century Arab warlordโs empire. Islam was not a victim of colonialism. It was the greatest colonial project in history. It conquered by force, erased entire civilizations, and replaced them with what you see today. Israel, by contrast, is the most successful decolonization project in history. A people returning to their land. Restoring what was stolen from them. Resisting the ideology that wrecked the Middle East and North Africa.

Itโs interesting how many former Muslims, whether Arab or Iranian, end up reproducing the same rigid, black-and-white worldview they claim to have escaped, often while advancing historical narratives that have little to do with reality.
In the Iranian case, one often hears the claim that the Islamic conquest destroyed, or at least permanently tarnished, a once-great civilization, condemning Iran to backwardness. But that simply does not hold up historically. The Iranian plateau continued to produce major empires long after the conquest, and Persianate civilization arguably reached its cultural zenith under Islam. In fact, Islam became a crucial vehicle through which Persian culture, literature, statecraft, and aesthetics spread from the Balkans to Bengal.
The same inaccurate simplification appears in the Arab case, even if the context there is somewhat different and more nuanced. One can plausibly argue that, had regions like Egypt and Syria remained Christian, they might today resemble countries such as Greece or Italy more closely and perhaps would be integrated into the same political and economic blocs, with higher levels of prosperity as a result. However, that kind of counterfactual skips over more than a millennium of actual history, during which these lands were central to powerful and sophisticated Muslim empires and enjoyed periods of great wealth and influence.
Egypt is a good example. Although one could argue that it declined in certain respects after the Arab conquests, relative to its place in the Roman world, it nevertheless went on to experience another period of flourishing under the Fatimids and Mamluks, becoming a wealthy and strategically important center, as well as a prized ally and trade partner for the Christian Byzantines and Italian city-states.
All of this makes it difficult to take seriously the claim that Islam was somehow inherently โdecivilizing.โ Medieval Islamic civilization was clearly not backward, and its sophistication and grandeur remain visible in the monuments it left behind, from Cordoba to Samarkand and beyond.
