@policy_uk I've obviously left out things like: editing a journal, managing a grant, convening seminars, and (YES!) actually doing some research. You're not wrong, we do have more flexible summers - and we need them. But 3 weeks turnaround time for marking is eminently reasonable.

@policy_uk at dissertation drafts, fielding student queries etc (lets conservatively say 4 hours); 3 hours of departmental service (meetings, open days, REF admin etc); and one hour of PhD supervision. That's 37 hours out of my 37 hour contract, with 0 spent on research!

Essays and exam papers not returned for weeks or still worse months…emails not replied to..disinterested during supervisions / office hours. The irony is getting salaried posts at universities is like climbing the Eiger. Selection processes seem to reward ineptitude?

The larger problem is that crooks at universities charge 9k for an English Lit degree. I doubt student below will have had more than 3 hours contact time a week. Many complain about the loan system but you are being ripped off at every level.

@policy_uk Again, wholeheartedly agree teachers are overworked and over-monitored. Do you have a suggested marking time? (in response to the above, typically two at my institution, and marking would generally take place during teaching term if submitted term 1, possibly not in term 2)

@LiseRButler And academic teaching staff are therefore underworked? The stories of laziness I could share. Yes the essays are longer but there is what, one full assignment per class per term to mark? Submitted typically at the end with a holiday/break without teaching obligations to mark?

@policy_uk Certainly agree teachers are massively overworked. How long do you propose a member of academic staff should devote to each 2500 word essay they mark What is an appropriate amount of time to read the work, mark it up, and provide 150-200 words of constructive feedback?

@LiseRButler Work set by university teachers should be returned within a fortnight (maximum). School teachers manage with far heavier teaching duties and a long list of other griefs university teaching staff are spared: Ofsted, safeguarding, BEHAVIOUR, longer terms… I could go on!

If anyone is newly thinking about Cyprus, its legacy of British colonialism, and the long tail of empire then might I interest them in a story I wrote for @Harper's about exactly that? (It even mentions a RAF airbase) harpers.org/archive/2025/1…

Goodbye Mac. Made it to fourteen and a half, an odd and wonderful dog. Had a lot of opinions about which walks he'd go on and which treats were good enough. But he was always a big pal and I will always miss him. They aren't human, but they are people.

Me in the latest @RenewalJournal on the state of Labour’s hard left, the potential rise of the soft left, and the prospects of cooperation between the two in order to save the party from electoral calamity. 👇 renewal.org.uk/articles/the-a…

One of the reasons why Carney was able to give such a powerful speech is that he has been thinking of these issues for a long time. He watched firsthand in 2016 as Britain committed what he considered to be a monumental act of stupidity with Brexit. Here he alludes to it directly

Check out the fab website of our project on histories of prediction, 'imagining tomorrow'! Its sleek design presents our conferences, exhibition and publications, including original artwork. I had a great time working with this wonderful team and I hope you enjoy the outcome!

Last week we launched 'Imagining Tomorrow: The Artefacts of Prediction' at the Manchester Museum, an exhibition exploring how physical objects from 1900 to the present - from bomb shelters to board games - have expressed visions of the future imaginingtomorrow.org.uk
