Me in @spectator Labour must also unapologetically be a government of the left: the one that has given rights to workers and renters, the one which has nationalised the railways, the one which has refused – for the first time in 60 years – not to enter an imperial war with the US

@HCH_Hill I grant you that vivas for every assessment for student in every module would be impossible! But as far as I know that’s never been a standard part of the (wider) British or indeed North American university systems.

@LiseRButler Possibly - but the original proposition is exams *and vivas*, which is where the scalability problem really hits. Proper vivas, like proper one-to-one or small-group tutorials, are time-intensive.

The answer, I suspect, is that this sort of assessment isn't remotely scalable to the scope of our engorged HE sectors. A return to old-fashioned assessment means a return to an old-fashioned size of academy, and that means fewer institutions and jobs.

I find this discourse perplexing because the solution seems straigthforward: make university marks almost entirely dependent on lengthy in-person exams that combine handwritten essays with oral questioning. Why is this even a conversation? Are there implementation barriers or something?

@HCH_Hill That thread seems mostly correct - but accommodations for disability etc. exist regardless of assessment type. I think the recent increase in exams has been a hassle for administrators at my uni, but a surmountable one.

Copyedited this & so read every word 4 times & so can confidently say it adds up to a very serious piece of work on the ERA & the status of work in UK. Step away from the Westminster swirl for a second and read about legislation that actually affects your life.
