In 1855, the Saturday Club's meetings were formalized & moved to the Omni Parker House. Notable members included Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Oliver Wendell Holmes & Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. In 1857 Saturday Club founded The Atlantic Monthly.

The residence known as the Amory-Ticknor House was built in 1804 by Thomas Amory. In 1830 George Ticknor bought 1 portion of the home. Ticknor had 1 of the largest private libraries in the US. While teaching @HarvardUniv, he completed his 3 volume History of Spanish Literature.

Francis Parkman, while still an undergrad @HarvardUniv in the 1840s, began a project that would take almost 30 yrs. The result was a 7 volume history of the conflict between France & England for control of the US. The house he built at 50 Chestnut Street is marked with a plaque.

Richard Henry Dana Sr. most notable work is the 1822 novel Paul Felton, an early example of gothic lit in the US. Paul Felton tells the story of the main character’s jealous drive to murder his wife. It has since been suggested that Edgar Allan Poe was influenced by Dana’s work.

Author Henry James became known around the turn of the 20th century for novels such as The Portrait of a Lady & The Bostonians. James spent much of his life in Europe but he & his family lived in Boston at various times & James revisited during his The American Scene book tour.

This holiday season marks the 9th annual @EmersonCollege Police Department Toys for Tots. Please drop new unwrapped toys at the Emerson College Police Station, 114 Boylston Street (next to the Barnes & Noble Bookstore) The ECPD will be accepting toys through Monday Dec 16.

The Brattle Book Shop has a reputation for the breadth of inventory they have—everything from cheap paperbacks to rare books. Staff visit estate sales, buying between 5,000 & 30,000 books, which contributes to their stock of over 250,000 items.
