Sir Isaac Newton died #onthisday in 1727. One of the most revered scientists of his age, Newton is most celebrated for his conception of the law of universal gravitation, as well as for his work in the fields of optics, mechanics and astronomy. Before his funeral in the Abbey, his body lay in state in the Jerusalem Chamber, and many of the Fellows of the Royal Society joined the procession of his coffin. His memorial in the nave includes a figure of Newton, along with boys using instruments related to his mathematical and optical work.

Monarch butterflies are making a comeback. Every year, they travel thousands of miles across North America to a few small mountain forests in central Mexico — forests that quite literally hold their future. Decades ago, monarchs covered 45 acres of forest in the winter. Since then, their numbers have drastically declined, but new data from @WWF shows they occupied 7.24 acres of forest this winter, up from 4.42 acres last year.
