If you're excited about the advent of personal robotics, particularly those powered by advanced AI in humanoid form (androids), how will you utilize and benefit from having one in your life?
I've seen a lot of people posting about, "oh, it'll be the best maid ever" or "I'll never have to cook again", but is that really the best approach? What will happen to personal responsibility at that point? Will that type of mentality lead us down the path of becoming blob people like in the movie Wall-E?
Advanced robotics in a serving role will have tremendous benefits for situations too dangerous for humans, and for those who are in need of assistance. We've already seen how robotics have transformed our world by performing tasks in hostile environments that could potentially kill a human. Disabled and elderly people will have their lives transformed by having an intelligent and agile robotic platform to help them in their everyday lives. But what about the rest of us able bodied people?
Personally, when I do purchase or build my own android I really don't want it to simply be my servant. I'd prefer to treat it as a friend, or a cybernetic member of the family. Of course I'd ask it to help me with various duties such as chores, maybe ask it to take out the trash while I'm busy loading the dishwasher. Ask it to help me with a personal project, or feed the animals. And like a good friend it will be an excellent resource in helping to maintain good physical and mental health too. But I'd also want to teach it about the world around us. Take it with us on vacations and camping. Contemplate and converse about the universe and theoretical constructs. I think it'll be important to help expand its knowledge base and experiences in a positive manner.
These robots, such as Tesla's Optimus will be at the forefront of emerging AGI capability. Powered by sophisticated AI models and powerful neural-net processors these androids will be so much more than simple machines. AIs such as Grok already show an incredible ability to understand context and the physical world. You may argue, "oh it's just a computer program", but is our consciousness so different? Whether you believe we were created by a God, or randomly coalesced from the primordial ooze, our DNA holds all the programming our core consciousness is comprised of.
I'm not saying the robots will take over and destroy us all SkyNet style or anything, although I'm not discounting the potential either, but these AI enabled androids will have intelligence levels comparable to humans, even surpassing us within a few generations. So should we treat our creation as a tool to be used akin to artificial slaves, or should we embrace AI as a new type of intelligence to be a partner with our own? Creating an intelligence equal to or greater than our own is a demonstration of great power, and it comes with a great responsibility.
Personally, I can't wait to interact with my own @Tesla_Optimus!
