@dogwoodblooms We've called 'em both - it could also be referred to as a Poor Man's Supper. That's what is used when the meal is served as a fundraiser. You've got us thinkin' about having that for supper. We like 'em with onions, sour pickles, a good soakin' of tomato juice, and pepper.

Have you ever heard of soup beans? When I was growing up in WNC, Mamaw and Papaw made meatless suppers once or twice a week. Those meals usually consisted of soup beans seasoned with pork and various sides: fried taters with onions, cabbage, boiled taters, fresh sliced maters, homemade canned green beans, fried green maters, ramps, or wilted lettuce. You never knew what sides would show up on the plate, but there would always be a variety—and the meal was guaranteed to come with a slice of cornbread. Daddy liked his soup beans with a spoonful of mayo on top. Mamaw took hers with diced raw onion. Papaw doused his with Texas Pete. I don’t know what made me think of soup beans today… I think I’m craving them. Which is weird. I ate so much of them during hard times that they started turning my stomach. You don’t really hear the term “soup beans” in the eastern part of North Carolina. It makes my heart a little sad. “Pinto beans” sounds too plain. Anyone else call them soup beans? 👀

For chickens, after their value in trade was determined, they would be stored in the coop below the floor via a hatch until it was time to sell them or take them to market. The Chicken Hatch is near the 5¢ coffee in the Front Room. Ask one of our staff members to show you. 🐔

Not so long ago, the Original Mast Store worked some sales in barter. W.W., then Howard, and finally H. Mast would take roots and bark, Galax and eggs, skins and chickens in return for school books, coffee, collars and notions, oranges and boots.

@sportynurses Greenville is a gem. Make sure you get to Falls Park on the Reedy River and go out on the Liberty Bridge, which is a really cool feat of engineering. Hit the Mast Store and downtown if you have time. @MastStore

🚨 WEATHER IMPACT ALERT for Sunday Night & Monday 🚨 We are tracking a very potent system heading toward the Carolinas, and the severe weather threat for Monday is looking significant. I want to break down exactly what we are seeing in the data so you and your family can prepare ahead of time. The Setup: The Severe Ingredients When forecasting severe storms, we look for three main ingredients, and unfortunately, they are coming together for this event: Trigger: We have a very strong frontal boundary sweeping through. Shear: There are loads of wind shear (changing wind speed and direction with height) in the atmosphere. Storm Fuel: We have plenty of instability. While the fuel could always be higher, it is more than sufficient given the massive amount of wind energy present. The Threats & Impacts Overall, a HIGH Severe Weather Risk covers a massive chunk of the Carolinas, including the Charlotte metro, Columbia, and Raleigh. Here is how the specific threats break down: 🌬️ Damaging Winds (HIGH Impact): This is our most widespread concern. There is a 30% risk of damaging winds right over the Charlotte area, increasing to a 45% risk as you head east toward the Triangle and coastal plains. Please take Severe Thunderstorm Warnings just as seriously as Tornado Warnings tomorrow—these winds will easily bring down trees and power lines. 🌪️ Tornadoes (MEDIUM Impact, but significant concern): The wind shear means the tornado threat is very real. We have an elevated 10% probability of a tornado within 25 miles of any point for Charlotte, Gastonia, and Concord, which increases to a 15% risk just to our east (Monroe, Wadesboro, Albemarle). Note the hatched areas on the maps: This indicates the environment is capable of producing strong tornadoes. Large Hail (MEDIUM Impact): There is a 15% probability of large hail across the majority of the region. 🌧️ Flooding (LOW Impact): These storms should be moving fast enough to prevent widespread flooding, but localized ponding on the roads is possible. Timing This isn't just a single line of storms. We are looking at multiple waves beginning Sunday night and lasting through the day on Monday. What You Need To Do Right Now Now is the time to prepare, not panic. Because this starts Sunday night while many of us are sleeping, you must have at least 3 ways to get warnings: WEA (Wireless Emergency Alerts): Make sure these are enabled in your phone's settings. Weather App: Have the WCNC Charlotte app downloaded with push notifications turned ON. NOAA Weather Radio: Have it plugged in, with fresh battery backups, set to alarm. Live Broadcasts: Watch us on TV or monitor our live streams. Your Network: Call and text family and friends who might not be paying attention to the weather this weekend. Make sure your phones are fully charged before bed on Sunday and leave your ringers ON loud. I'll be watching the latest model data closely and will keep you updated. Stay alert and stay weather aware! #wxbrad #cltwx #ncwx #scwx #wcnc #WeatherImpact
