You're ignoring all the data: addiction and mental illness usually develops AFTER being unhoused, not prior to. The conditions of living on the street are so psychologically damaging people turn to drugs (which are easy to get on the street). The majority of people who fall into homelessness do so because of economic conditions combined with lack of familial (or other) support. There are even more people who are *technically* homeless that don't even show up on the most stats because they live in cars or are perpetually couch surfing and most homelessness stats are gathered via either self-report or hand counts, both of which often miss people in precarious temporary housing situations like the ones I mentioned. Please read some actual literature on this topic. It's impossible to "just be honest", as your bio says, when you've done none of the relevant research. You're the one operating off vibes here simply because the most *visible* homeless tend to also suffer from psychological conditions or addictions and that makes you uncomfortable. That's not the majority of actual unhoused individuals. Have some fucking compassion.

Only 25~30% of homeless persons have serious mental illnesses (SMIs). And more than half have TBIs, often as a result of encounters while unhoused. I'm a policy researcher; I've read more boring journal articles than is probably healthy. If anything, the data supports "far left" positions, unless you deliberately want to be paternalistic and punitive in spite of overwhelming evidence as to causation, and the overwhelming evidence shows it's an economic problem, not a behavioral/moral problem. Except Rae wants to help these people, not just sweep them from district to district like previous city execs. This is the result of current policy-makers bowing to conservative demands, not "progressive" anything.
