Several years ago, we had a tornado warning, which is not unusual, so I generally keep an ear open but carry on. One time, as the warning was issued, I took the family to dinner at a Sonic drive-in. Out of an abundance of caution, we listened to the radio while eating and, yes, an EF2 tornado touched down about 15 minutes east. So now, when we get a warning, all my kids email from around the country and ask if I'm heading out to Sonic!

Tornado sirens going off here right now. Not a drill. It’s raining. Hard. Thunder. lightning. Tornado spotted an hour north west of us. Earlier this evening. Another spotted 20 minutes north

I've worked with first responders for a good portion of my career. I could have enjoyed being a firefighter or paramedic. But I could never be a police officer. Kudos to those that are, but the patience required is well beyond what I have.

Homeschool. Homeschool NOW! Not just in Virginia. Nationwide.
Nick Freitas@NickJFreitas

Many will not like reading this, but it's a fact. Having served 4 years on the Education Committee in the Virginia House of Delegates, I can tell you that there is no school district in the Commonwealth, no matter how rural or conservative, that Democrats are not trying to mandate indoctrination that runs contrary to your principles. Thats not hyperbolic, it's reality. They don't call it indoctrination, because they don't see it that way. They see it as correcting the mistakes of your parenting, which in their view is not "progressive or tolerant" enough. And since they don't have enough of their own kids to win elections, they need yours to "think correctly" about these things before they reach voting age. So in their view this is essential to "preserve our democracy." Make sense now? Now someone will read this and ask me "why didn't you fix it?" And the answer is simple...because we never had sufficient votes to get the legislation passed. It wasn't for lack of submitting bills and fighting for them, not a single Democrat would vote for any of it and as long as they controlled just one part of the legislative process they could prevent all of it, because thats how the system works. In my entire 10 years in the General Assembly there wasn't a single year where they didn't at least control one part of the process. But now nothing is preventing them...because they have the votes and they control the entire process.

@TeeplesCY I'm hoping that the teacher who marked it wrong took some constructive criticism and changed the decision. Unlike those we meet here on X...

This image is a good representation of the “Mormons aren’t Christian” discussion.

Latter-day Saints aren’t Traditional Christians. They are Restorationist Christians. This is a distinct tradition that aims to bypass centuries of church councils and follow the Jesus found in the New Testament. Traditional Christianity is defined largely by church councils held hundreds of years after Christ walked the earth. These councils produced creeds, formal checklists of belief meant to draw hard boundaries around who Jesus is. The most famous, the Nicene Creed, decided that the Father and Son are the exact same "substance." Latter-day Saints see the creeds as additions made centuries after the apostles, ones that moved Christianity away from the Jesus described in the New Testament. Ironically, while critics often claim the Latter-day Saint Jesus is somehow lesser, many scholars see it the other way. The late Catholic theologian Stephen Webb observed that the Book of Mormon is utterly obsessed with Jesus Christ. Not reverent. Not focused. Obsessed. He noted that while many modern traditional denominations have actually softened the divinity of Jesus, treating him more like a nice moral teacher, Latter-day Saints have gone in the opposite direction. Webb observed that their Jesus is maximalist. He is the Creator, the God of the Old Testament, and the literal Savior of the whole world. The Latter-day Saint Jesus isn't a diluted version of the Christian one. It isn't a "different Jesus" because he is less. It's a "different Jesus" because he is so central to the faith that it can be startling to outsiders.

I could use some prayers. My mom is coming to visit, and as much as I love her, this is a highly combustible part of my life that stresses me out more than almost anything else.

@EricCMeadows My newest acquisition. It's a GEM Traveler. When you pull out the razor and padding, the case can become a cigarette case! Not like that really helps me...
