This photo was taken at a Uyghur solidarity protest. The Sikh brothers standing with me were there because they cared about the suffering of fellow human beings. Nobody looked at them and saw a threat. Nobody demanded their religious symbols be banned. The killing of Henry Nowak was a tragedy, and those responsible should face justice. For generations, Sikhs in Britain have been trusted with religious exemptions that are an important part of their faith. The overwhelming majority have honoured that trust and lived peacefully within the law. As Muslims, we also benefit from religious freedoms and legal accommodations. We should be careful about abandoning principles of religious liberty because of the actions of one individual.
