Must-watch for PlayStation history buffs. It focused a lot on Masahide Ohashi, the Toshiba engineer who designed the PS1's GPU and its texture-mapping capabilities. He sadly died of cancer just one year after the PS1's release. I had never heard his story before.

@retroOtoko I've heard from several Japanese sources - personalities, news reports - it being pronounced Yah-mao-chi. Maybe this is a Kyoto regional thing but this extends even to people at Nintendo of America. For the Nintendo family, it's not yah-mah-oo-chee.

@Dosunceste My comment was clearly talking about the home console market, not the handheld market. Consolidated profit numbers aren't very useful since they only indirectly reflect subsidiary profits/losses (and usually on a delay). And, Sega was chasing revenue growth, not profits.

People say Sega made a big mistake by not using the SGI chipset (used in the N64). SOA's problem with the Saturn was the cost. They certainly could not have overcome this with the SGI chipset. When the N64 was released, it cost ¥5000 more than the Saturn, without a CD drive.

@MegaDriveShock you should also adjust revenue for inflation, and adjust for user base. in 93 there were like 70 million core console gamers globally. vs like 300 million today.

I see takes like this all the time, but... Sega Sammy's revenue for FY2024 was ¥467 billion yen! That's much greater than in the 90s. For consumer sales: Sega did about the same this year as at its 90s peak (93 and 94). It's one of the top 5 Japanese game publishers.

@STGshmups It's also complicated by the value of the yen, which has changed a lot over the past 30 years, but Sega's sales have also shifted heavily to Japan since then, so a comparison isn't easy.
