@gregtangmath I heard once, “To teach is to learn twice.” Teaching, to your point, is more difficult and rewarding than just solving.

I had to think hard about how I would TEACH numbers 3 and 4. Solving them is one thing. Teaching them is another. Teaching them to a student who struggles? That’s the ultimate challenge and what makes our job so challenging and oh so rewarding!

Problems like these are designed to EVENTUALLY be mental math problems. Do they look daunting? Sure they do. But not if we develop kids number sense properly. These puzzles are great for math centers because they are easily differentiated by filling in a number or two or three!
