@robinsonmeyer @heatmap_news Do you think AI is overdiscussed as part of the problem? I see way more coverage of it in mainstream media relative to the other issues, often citing to utility systems that are outliers in terms of data center concentration.

Why has electricity gotten so expensive in America? Here’s what I found for @heatmap_news: 1. More spending on poles, wires, and transformers 2. Higher disaster costs 3. The post-Ukraine gas shock working its way into rates 4. Higher demand from AI, data centers, etc

Good article. Reminds me of when a client asked if backyard composting was sustainable: maybe composting is, but backyards are definitely not!

I talked to @robinsonmeyer about how legalizing the construction of new homes in places where people want to live is great for the climate too.

This really isn’t that useful, though? Textiles is a huge industry that demands systemic, global regulation. Nutrition labels exist because people have different nutritional needs, but people don’t have different textile sustainability needs.

I don't wanna rag too hard on the episode, there's plenty of good stuff in there, it's just not that likely that AI will really expand energy demand that much.

Rare L from @tracyalloway and @TheStalwart on today's Odd Lots. Framing the data center energy issue around AI misses what's really going on. A quick thread:

I am flattered to be mentioned and I am excited that Brett’s book is coming out but the context here is kinda funny — this phrase wasn’t about Congress “dithering about renewing some green tax credits,” but Manchin killing the legislation that became the Inflation Reduction Act.
