I must admit I don't really understand why British people seem to unanimously agree that being a "career politician" is a bad thing. Being a politician is a job like any other. You couldn't just drop Jeff from the local pub into parliament and expect him to do a good job.

@BovrilG My most charitable reconstruction of Boomers goes like this: they mistakenly believe theyve got to the top in a free system, & rightly identify a lot of leftist people wanting to redistribute their money. Realizing theyre beneficiaries of unfree UK is too much for their old souls

I’ve been trying to be more understanding to Boomers over the last few days so I feel I’ve earned the right to say this to them. You are an electoral bloc whose power peaked in the late 2010s and will start to decline more and more precipitously as the oldest Boomers start to die off. Being asset-rich and cash-poor, you are INCREDIBLY vulnerable to a confiscatory government. Unless you can build some sort of working social contract for younger people, you will almost certainly spend the last decade of your life in a cheerless State care home being occasionally slapped around by surly West African carers.

The replies to this show us why the British right is doomed. Complete inability to show empathy or solidarity with young people. Almost makes me want to vote green!

@SamBuntz Because it is an empty sophism without any predictive power. It sounds nice, but you can't use it for predicting anything about the actual capacities of LLMs.

@SamBuntz @gmiller No, you don't learn what the word "toaster" *means* by making toast. You learn things with which you can appropriately talk wrt to "toasters". Toaster only has meaning wrt to other words.

@gmiller No, I think this leaves the most important part out. It’s like saying we can only know what a toaster is by its relation to other words - “toast,” “bread,” “electricity,” etc. But you actually learn what a toaster is by making some toast. That’s the semantic key.

@kunley_drukpa Nick Land had a post where he says what matters is the highest welfare, not the average welfare. Likewise, what matters is the country with the whitest whites, not the country with the highest whiteness.

Dear philosophy friends: I'm toying with the idea of completely overhauling my Philosophy and Popular Culture syllabus. Could you recommend me pairings of good films and philosophical classics that you think would go well together?

My only response to boomer housing discourse is that my nan on her final salary teachers pension gets the same monthly income I get as a teacher on the inner London pay scale

@shylockh Because it's an annoying, long process that demands your time, with possible kids who decide to contact you--which, may I add, may not go down well with your future gf/wife

With some (very valid) exceptions, identifying as "British" over whatever constituent country you're from is sooo Con-Lib coalition coded.

@BovrilG African leftist leaders will really be like “We must choose between champagne for a few or drinking water for all” and then choose (in a brazen way I kinda respect) Champagne For a Few.

@emergenteffects What proportion do you think? How much is due to demographic replacement via emigration/fertility rates of adventurous Anglos? How much is due to ethnic replacement now 1/4 of pop.? How much is due to ageing population? I think this would account for at least 50% of the story

@ModescellarA While this is important, I don’t actually think this is the story here. There has been a bit of a crushing of the adventurous Anglo spirit and the introduction of tall poppy syndrome since the Attlee regime. This has only solidified over time.
