After reading all the character descriptions, the first thing that came to my mind was, “No wonder this script won the competition.” The story centers around Grand Prince Lee Ahn, played by Byeon Woo Seok. He is the son of King Hee Jong and the younger brother of King Seon Jong. Lee Ahn is portrayed as intelligent, highly capable, and extremely ambitious. Because of his outstanding abilities, the former king feared that Lee Ahn might one day overshadow the Crown Prince his own older brother. Ironically, even his brother seemed to believe that Lee Ahn was more suited to be king. Unlike Lee Ahn, the older brother was known to be carefree and less capable in comparison. However, in a royal family where succession by the eldest son is the rule, there was no escaping fate. Out of fear that Lee Ahn might eventually threaten the throne, the former king even went as far as changing Lee Ahn’s royal title to prevent him from becoming king. As a result, Lee Ahn chose to hide his true self. He suppressed his talents and ambitions, distancing himself from the world so that his brother, King Seon Jong, could keep the throne safely and eventually pass it down to his heir. Then there is Yoon Irang, played by Gong Seung Yeon. She comes from the powerful Yoon family, a prestigious lineage that has produced four queens and strongly upholds the monarchy. Raised to become the perfect queen, Irang is elegant, composed and emotionally distant. She first meets Lee Ahn at the Royal Academy before she even meets her own fiance, Lee Ahn’s older brother. From the beginning, she senses a similarity between them, as if they share the same way of thinking and seeing the world. That similarity draws her toward Lee Ahn, but she is also fully aware that she is already engaged to his brother. Still, a forbidden thought occasionally crosses her mind what if Lee Ahn had been the Crown Prince instead. Eventually, Irang marries Lee Ahn’s brother and gives birth to a son who will become the next Crown Prince. However, their political marriage brings no happiness. Her husband is rumored to drink heavily, while Irang herself becomes a cold and strict mother. Everything changes when Lee Ahn’s brother dies in an accident. His young son ascends the throne at the age of five, leaving the kingdom in a fragile position. With the king still a child, Lee Ahn is forced to become the regent, ruling the kingdom on his nephew’s behalf. This is where the real conflict between Lee Ahn and Irang begins. Deep down, Irang seems to carry a quiet regret. She does not want Lee Ahn to become king because if she had known that fate would lead to this moment, perhaps she would not have given him up in the past. Another key figure is Hee Joo, played by IU. She is portrayed as capable, intelligent, and fiercely ambitious. However, she carries a heavy stigma she is an illegitimate child. Despite her talents enough to surpass her half siblings her father plans to marry her off to an ordinary man so she will not outshine the legitimate heir. Refusing to accept that fate, Hee Joo makes a bold decision. If she cannot gain recognition within her own family, then she will claim the most desirable man in the kingdom Lee Ahn, the cold and powerful grand prince who may one day hold the throne.
