They nearly killed me at the gym today, all because of leg press.
For the past one week, I’ve been focusing on arms, abs, and chest, but I decided to dedicate Thursdays to legs. I can’t come and be building only my upper body and end up looking like Johnny Bravo.
So I entered the gym today with purpose.
I walked over to the leg press area and saw one uncle pushing 120kg — 20, 20, 20 on both sides.
“16…17…18…”
This man got to 20 and was still going.
“23…24…25…”
And he was doing it like it was nothing. No shaking. No suffering. Just pressing it like it was nothing.
I said okay na. Let me start with leg press too.
He looked at me and asked if I wanted to use it.
I nodded confidently. “Yes.”
He stood up, and I positioned myself.
“1…2…3…”
Ah ah. This thing is easy oo.
So this is what people are shouting about? It’s not even that heavy. I can even beat the 25 he did earlier sef. Easy thing.
Then he said, “No, you have to push with your legs first, then release the weight with this handle.”
Ohhhhh.

I pushed with my legs, released the handle by my side, and immediately felt the force of full 120kg descend on my legs.
That weight wanted to humble my entire bloodline.
“I can do it. I can do it,” I kept muttering to myself, even as my legs had already started shaking as I tried to push.
“Oya, release and push back with your legs.”
Uncle was still standing there beside me, doing gym instructor directly inside my ear.
Sir, can you not see that my legs are vibrating? HELP ME.
I released it and felt the machine fold my legs into my chest. My heart nearly jumped out of my body.
“You can do it! Give me 5!”

I pushed with every ounce of strength left in my legs, and somehow the weights moved.
“Good! 4 more! Give me 4 more!”
I released again and pushed with everything inside me. That’s 2 reps now. 3 more to go. I can do this.
I released and pushed again.
“That’s it! 2 more to go! Give me 2 more! Let’s go for 4!”
At this point, I wanted to tell Uncle Motivator that he was making too much noise inside my ear, but I knew that if I opened my mouth, my soul might leave my body.
So I released and pushed again.
“That’s 4! Give me one more!”
Finally.
Last one.
I released and pushed again.
“That’s 4. One more to go.”
Hanh?! 🤨😟
Uncle, didn’t I already give you one more before?
Okay, no problem. Let me do the “last one” again.
I released and pushed.
“You can do it! That’s 4. Give me one more!”
Ha!
It’s like this uncle did not attend Primary 3. Is it that you genuinely cannot count?

I released and pushed again.

At that point, I was done.
I just released the weight and allowed it to come and crush me. Let everybody rest.
The next thing I saw was Uncle rushing to rescue my life. The same person that wanted to use “one more” to kill me.
Me that has not even born child yet.
Then he said, “Nice one bro, nice one! Rest one minute, and we’ll go for the second set.”

I just nodded “yes”, stood up, and quietly went to the changing room to shower and change.
Because what do you mean by second set?
Am I training for war?
