I’ve realized that many people don’t actually love reading books they love the identity of being someone who reads books. The aesthetic, the photos, the “intellectual” vibe.
But the quiet discipline of actually reading slowly, sitting with ideas, and thinking deeply? That part is far less popular.

I tried to work at Spur once, you don’t get paid after the first month “training” 😄 you are expected to survive on tips for two months, mind you - sometimes you knock off at 00:00? So you’re clocking in full shifts for free.

No, South Africans want to do those jobs but they’re not willing to be exploited by their employers. Foreigners get even less than the minimum wage and since they’re desperate, they’ll work. Now do you see the problem? So while South Africans are dealing with companies that exploit them, foreigners offer these companies a solution by offering their cheap labour. This is counterproductive to the cause and it should be dealt with.
