For those who want the TLDR. Maria Grace made a post earlier warning about a serial harasser who's made numerous posts on Twitter filled with bad intentions attending a con she intended on going to. The con seems to have banned or told the individual not to come. Yet seemingly also blocked Maria on Twitter. Mind you the individual in question appears to have deleted most of his posts related to his harassment towards Maria and others. But all of it was public and easily accessible for any and all to see. [...] I will give the con some grace. Maria did put them in an awkward position by making the post immediately instead of waiting for confirmation back. Yet would that hypothetically justify kicking her out of the con ? I'd say mostly no. It would feel like collective punishment. Which is tactless, deeply unfair and intellectually insulting. I urge the con to be very careful about how they plan to handle this in the upcoming weeks. [...] If the topic of "does this constitutes harassment" was up for debate. We'd be debating it. But everything until recently was public. For everyone to see and acknowledge. Having a stalker/harraser is not a controversy. Unfortunately that happens very often to content creators. I'm sure other attendees will be pleased knowing that they will face repercussions if they are victims of a deranged individual. [...] Mind you I've witnessed all of this from a far distance. Maybe more information will come out and make me change my mind. But as far as I can see currently, as I am writing this. This is a massive blunder. The sort of reaction someone woefully unprepared and reckless would take. [...] It's long overdue for many conventions to take themselves seriously. We hope a fire doesn't start, yet we still prepare a fire safety plan just in case. Similarly, more con should prepare procedures on how to handle PR/drama/incidents. Make some damn protocols.
