Mel Gibson’s monumental follow-up to The Passion of the Christ has officially wrapped filming, and it is coming to theaters in a massive, unprecedented two-part event in 2027. Titled The Resurrection of the Christ, this $100 million epic from Lionsgate isn't just a simple historical retelling. Gibson and co-writer Randall Wallace are taking audiences on a visceral, supernatural journey—what Gibson himself has teased as an "incredible adventure" into another realm. The films will dive deep into the harrowing three days between Christ’s crucifixion and His resurrection, depicting His descent into Sheol (Hell), confrontations with fallen angels, and the epic Harrowing of Hell to rescue the souls held in bondage. Due to the immense logistical challenges and high costs of de-aging CGI, the original 2004 cast has been completely replaced. Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen takes over the iconic role of Jesus from Jim Caviezel. He is joined by Mariela Garriga as Mary Magdalene and Kasia Smutniak as Mary, the mother of Jesus. Honoring the groundbreaking realism of the original, the sequel was shot entirely in Italy (including Cinecittà Studios in Rome and the ancient streets of Matera) and will once again be spoken strictly in Aramaic, Hebrew, and Latin. In a brilliant release strategy, Part One will hit theaters on Good Friday, March 26, 2027. Part Two follows exactly 40 days later on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027—perfectly mirroring the actual biblical timeline of Christ’s Resurrection and His Ascension into Heaven. The original film shattered industry expectations, grossing over $610 million on a mere $30 million budget and holding the title of the highest-grossing R-rated film in domestic box office history for two decades. With a much larger budget and a wildly ambitious supernatural scope, the anticipation for this two-part event is off the charts.
