The WBC has ordered cruiserweight champion Noel Mikaelian to defend his title against unified champion David Benavidez, according to a letter obtained by The Ring’s @MikeCoppinger. Mikaelian has been in talks to fight Ring Magazine champion Jai Opetaia in the fall.

I like David but there is a pattern in his career. He never fights the top guy in his division. At super middleweight no Canelo. At light heavyweight no Bivol or Beterbiev. At cruiserweight no Jai Opetaia and Jai has called him out and David is already dismissing that fight. The narrative is that nobody wants to fight him but Jai has shown willingness and you heard David’s response. At some point it can’t be a coincidence that in every division he competes in he never fights the top guy. When do we start assigning accountability to him for the way his career is going? It can’t always be the other guy’s fault.

@SpicyBoxing Canelo has always been more about the money than his fans or heritage while Benavidez fights for the fans & Mexico.

If I had it my way… I would want Canelo to invest in himself more and his brand Canelo Promotions. I would love him to host himself, his fighters, his culture, his community… I would not want Canelo to fight Jake Paul, I also, don’t want Canelo to finish his career under Turki. I think our Mexican culture offers so much and that isn’t properly being expressed in any promotion company. Bring back Guadalajara, the Mexican stadium vibes, our people, our music… Share that with the world your way! @canelo
