On 14 June 1381, during the peasants’ revolt in England, Wat Tyler’s rebel army of some 50,000 to 100,000 people captured London Bridge and the Tower of London. There they killed the chancellor, Archbishop Simon of Sudbury, and the treasurer, Sir Robert Hales. The rebellion had broken out in May in protest at the imposition of a poll tax on everyone aged fifteen and over, which exacerbated the economic hardship of workers and the poor. People were also enraged by the brutality of tax inspectors, who measured people’s pubic hair to determine their age, which was seen as state-sanctioned sexual assault, particularly in the case of girls and women. The rebellion soon developed into a deep and sophisticated social movement demanding radical changes to feudal society and peaked with the taking of the Tower. On June 15, Wat Tyler attended a parley with the king Richard II, where he was murdered. Realising his weak position, Richard promised the rebels that he would implement many of their demands, including the abolition of the tax, and even the abolition of forced labor and serfdom, but, while the poll tax was ended, once the rebels had dispersed and returned home, they were no longer a threat, so Richard reneged on all of his other pledges and hanged 1,500 of them. It was a brutal but important lesson not to trust the promises of the powerful. This is one of hundreds of stories featured in our first book, Working Class History: Everyday Acts of Resistance & Rebellion

🚨 I was pulled over just now by these traffice officers on the N1 on my from my farm to Bloemfontein.🚨 The male officer informed me that my drivers license expired a week ago and that he is going to take my car keys to prevent me from driving any further. I told him he must write me a ticket because I have 3 kids in the car and cannot be without my car, and that I am going to call my husband to come assit me, because he is not being reasonable. He then tried to take my car's keys and my telephone and I closed my window so fast because he was getting aggressive. I told him that he cannot do what he is doing, and he said he can do anything he wants to, because he is an officer of the law and not me. He started writing the ticket and then went to his car to call a female officer. On her arrival I opened my window again to talk to her and just as the conversation went a bit south, she put her arm through the open window and slapped me through my face twice. I struggled to close my window with her arm halfway through it to get another slap at me, and was so shocked! She called me a fucking white person and said that they are not scared of me and she will hit me when and if I get out of my car. I sat there while they shouted at me over and over that they are not scared of me and they will show me that I am not above the law. It looked like he was taking pictures of me and my car?? To do what with? To harass me on the roads?? I shouted at them that I will lay charges of assault against her, and she said I can go ahead. My husband arrived and this is a video of their attitudes. We were advised by a police officer of Glen that we must go to the station - we will be helped there with the charges and with my statement. At the police station the 1 officer and the captain started yelling at us to keep quiet, because we must not tell them how to do their jobs and they want to listen to the officers. After about 20 minutes we had to leave, because the police was not interested in taking the traffic officers names or to have my statement, because they "have to take the traffic officers' statements first to hear what they have to say and then they will take time to listen to us". I told the police captain that I was just slapped twice through my face by an officer in front of a 12 year old, 11 year old and a 10 year old who are now so scared of a traffic officer and that I want to lay a charge. And she just said she does not need to take any statements from me and I must stop telling her what she must do. Even Botha realized that there is absolutely NOTHING to be done and we better leave before we get arrested for trying to speak!!!!! If you open your mouth, you get shouted at in Sotho by police officials!!!! I cannot even lay a charge at a police station, because they say they don't have to hear anything I have to say and that the traffic officer says she will never do something like that!!!!!Now here I am. What the hell!!! Go back tomorrow to just get another useless SAPS officer? And get pulled over by the same people obviously now going to target me, as this is the road I have to drive to the city? PLEASE SHARE that their faces and this absurdness can spread as far and wide ⁉️

On a stretch of the River Roding in Barking strewn with waste and detritus, a barrister named Paul Powlesland did something the British state has spent decades failing to do: he cleaned it and made it look like a river again. He now faces legal action. Yep. He and a group of volunteers hired a digger for £1,000 of their own money and hauled more than 200 bags of filth out of the water - packaging, broken appliances, used needles, even weapons. By any sane reckoning it was a small act of public good, civic spirit at its most potent and wholesome. For his trouble, he received a letter from the Environment Agency informing him that he is under investigation for working without a permit, an offence that carries up to two years in prison. The same Environment Agency that found the will to come after a volunteer for cleaning a river without the right paperwork has not, on that same river, prosecuted a single one of the illegal sewage spills that have fouled it for years. Not one. It's too fat, scrofulous, and indolent to fight the sort of people who'd do this. But it has energy to spare for the man with the digger and the bin bags because they expect he's likely to be a reasonable sort of Englishman who pays his taxes and honours procedure, however unreasonable it may be, when levied upon him. Protecting rivers? They have no interest in that. This is the thing about our institutions that the public grasps in its bones and the people who run them never will. Our institutions fail, and the manner of their failing is the worst part of it - the bloodless, box-ticking, permission-withholding callousness of bodies that have forgotten they exist to achieve anything at all. They should all be cleared out; every decision-making body in the building responsible for the dereliction of duty, and for daring to persecute a member of the public, must be hollowed out. The whole thing started from scratch. Better yet, I'll tell you what an outfit like Progress will do once it gains power; we'll put people like @paulpowlesland in charge of the very body now threatening to jail him. The institutions meant to look after this country - the Environment Agency and a dozen like it - are dying of exactly the defensive, do-nothing culture that sent that letter. They need to be run by people like him who actually give a toss. People with the brains to understand the problem and the plain human instinct to go and fix it themselves, while the rest stand on the bank writing their little sociopathic missives to the ones who already did. I don't know the first thing about Paul. I've never met him. I don't know what his political preferences are, the shape of his beliefs, what else we would agree or disagree on. None of that means a thing to me. He's a good man, and the right kind of man to make things work; and Progress is an attempt to make the country work, not a club made to serve a certain type or belief profile. A country is made to work by the people who, whatever their politics, cannot walk past a problem without trying to solve it. There are such people everywhere in Britain - on the rivers, in the schools, the wards, the workshops - and almost none of them are running anything, because the institutions have been built to keep that exact kind of person out. Drop the case against him. Then go further: find the hundred other Paul Powleslands the country is currently ignoring or threatening, and give them the keys. Put the responsibility and the authority, together, in their hands. Britain will be cleaned up - its rivers, and a great deal besides - in no time. It will be done by the people willing to get in the water, not by the ones writing letters about permits from the bank.

"We cannot be dictated to on our transformation policies. If you say the ANC must abandon BEE, you are saying we must cease to exist, and we won't do that." — ANC SECRETARY-GENERAL, FIKILE MBALULA When the ANC cadre says "we," he is not talking about the South African people. He is talking about the ANC bosses. What would cease to exist are the ANC tenderpreneurs, the mining cartels, and the bogus businessmen. These are the people who just pin their names onto investments and companies through their proximity to power, without offering any actual service or value.

They don't want people to figure out that if they just get off their arse they can fix their own community in 2 weeks. They want you to keep paying them taxes so they can fix your community for you. In 3 years. Maybe. Probably not.

Before he was an astronaut. Before he orbited the Earth. Before he was a senator. He was a Marine fighter pilot so aggressive, so willing to dive into enemy fire to hit his target, that he kept coming home with hundreds of holes in his jet. Every single time Jackson Hinkle shills for Zimbabwe's economy, it is pure, unadulterated fiction. When you read these packaged lithium posts, you would swear Zimbabwe is on the verge of becoming the next Dubai. Chinese conglomerates now monopolize nearly 90% of Zimbabwean lithium reserves. Celebrating these processing plants is completely premature. Foreign capital and foreign engineers do all the heavy lifting, while minimal royalties act as mere surface level rent to buy local compliance. On the ground, there is zero meaningful skill transfer and absolutely no real community benefit. Zimbabwe is gaining no national ownership, just foreign corporations extracting generational wealth and leaving toxic dumpsites in their wake. Zimbabwe is not industrializing. It is just hosting its own looting.

Disgraceful behavior by Nedbank, if true. "I did not authorise the transaction. I did not add the beneficiary. I did not provide an OTP. I did not provide a PIN. I did not provide biometric verification. I did not approve the payment. I was only informed after the money had already left my account. There were no calls or emails to say that my account had been compromised. I had to inform them!" iol.co.za/news/south-afr…

Today, the crisis manifests as migration. Tomorrow, it will be tax revolts. The disparity between the heavy tax burden borne by ordinary South Africans and the sheer scale of state corruption, systemic theft, and collapsing infrastructure is staggering. When the fundamental social contract between a state and its people collapses, invoking the "law" to enforce continuous financial extraction raises serious ethical questions. When the state demands tax compliance while they themselves evade accountability and prosecutions, it erodes the very foundations of our constitutional democracy. Considering the fortunes stolen from the public with zero accountability or prosecution, the current tax regime can no longer be justified. It is, quite simply, daylight fucking robbery.

Remember that time Elon Musk offered to write a check to UN World Food Programme to end world hunger, and his only requirement was that every dollar be accounted for and itemized for the public to see. And then the UN rejected his offer? Remember that? I do. Next time you want to attack the man for “hoarding wealth” while people go hungry…Remember he literally tried to give it away and the UN wouldn’t take it.

When 46 individuals capture over half of all BEE mining deals, the grand illusion of economic transformation is completely shattered. This is not empowerment. It is institutionalised kleptocracy disguised as social justice. The BEE has functioned as a closed loop syndicate for a tiny, politically connected elite. In South Africa, you do not achieve success through operational excellence, mineral innovation, or capital efficiency. You achieve it through proximity to the ruling party's deployment committee. Forty-six ANC cadres get unimaginably wealthy by simply signing their names on ownership certificates, while the actual miners and surrounding communities continue to live in absolute squalor. Global capital and serious mining houses look at South Africa and see an uninvestable landscape. They are forced to hand over massive equity chunks to non-productive political cronies just for the permission to build. Instead of investing profits back into advanced machinery, geological exploration, and stable logistics, billions are siphoned off into luxury estates and foreign bank accounts. When a regime treats its national resources as a private treasury for a selected few, it has surrendered all moral legitimacy to govern.

Bernie Sanders honeymooned in the Soviet Union in 1988. Yaroslavl, to be exact, a year before the Berlin Wall fell and the whole rotten edifice collapsed under the weight of its own central planning. This is the man who, in 1985, praised the Sandinistas and once said breadlines were a good thing. His exact reasoning: in poor countries the rich get the food and the poor starve, so breadlines mean rationing is at least spreading the misery around. Read that again. He looked at people queuing for hours to receive a government allotment of bread and saw fairness, not failure. Price controls destroy the signal that tells producers what to grow and how much. When the Politburo fixes the price of bread below cost, farmers stop producing, shelves empty, and people line up. A breadline is the visible result. The Soviets ran this experiment for 70 years and killed millions doing it. Sanders saw the wreckage up close in 1988 and still wanted more of it. Now look at the man today. A lakefront property in North Hero, Vermont. A home in Burlington. The democratic socialist who wants to seize your wealth has accumulated his own through book deals and a Senate salary, then locked it down in real estate the way every capitalist does. Sanders understands property rights perfectly well when the property is his. He understands that incentives matter when his own incentives are on the line. The system he condemns is the one that let a man who never held a real private-sector job until his 40s end up owning three homes and lecturing you about greed. He spent his life cheering for the economic order that produced breadlines and gulags, then cashed out under the one that produced grocery stores stocked with 40,000 items. He knows which one works. He just wants you to live under the other one.

The South African political class does not create. They extract. Builders create value. They solve global infrastructure problems. They expand human capability. Bureaucrats rely on force. They use fines and forced equity handouts. They make censorship demands. They want to control what they cannot build. Society suffers when productive people refuse to comply with state extortion. The state would rather its people have no internet at all than allow innovators to provide it without paying a political toll.

A small public service announcement from the Department of Things That You Should Know… It has not “peeked” your interest. Nor has it “peaked” your interest. …It has piqued your interest. You are not “phased” by something. You are fazed by it. If you’ve had a long day, you are weary. If you suspect someone is an idiot, you are wary. It is “due course”, not “do course”. “Per se”, not “per say”. And while we’re here, it’s “could have”, not “could of”, but that particular battle may already be lost. Thank you for your attention during this brief outbreak of grammatical housekeeping. This has been a @LairdofthManor announcement.🎩💙
