The world is being reordered by those who act and those who define. If India wishes to be counted among the latter, it must ensure that its silence does not speak louder than its convictions. We are living through a moment when the rules of the international system are being rewritten in real time. Assassinations of leaders, the killing of civilians, open assertions of force—these are no longer aberrations but instruments. In such a world, silence is not neutrality. It is read, interpreted, and often misread as consent. India has long claimed a distinctive space in global affairs—not as an appendage to power, but as a voice shaped by its own civilisational experience and its history of speaking for sovereignty, restraint, and balance. That voice mattered because it was consistent, even when inconvenient. Strategic autonomy cannot mean adjusting our language to the hierarchy of power. Restraint has its place. Calibration is necessary. But when fundamental questions arise—about sovereignty, about the limits of force, about the protection of civilians—India cannot afford to be silent. A moral compass is not an ornament of foreign policy. It is its direction. Without it, realism drifts into accommodation, and autonomy into ambiguity. This war has damaged India’s interests in almost every practical sense. It has raised costs, narrowed diplomatic room, stressed shipping, complicated Chabahar, and injected fresh instability into a region vital to India’s economy and external strategy. Even if New Delhi can cushion the blow, it cannot plausibly claim that the blow itself serves India. The deeper question is whether India is willing to say so with sufficient clarity.

A controversial plan to confine millions of stray dogs in large-scale 'mega shelters' has been branded a potential global public health disaster. The strategy, ordered by the Supreme Court of Indiain 2025, would see stray dogs across Delhi, home to more than 33 million people, rounded up and relocated into high-density facilities. Each shelter could house up to 5,000 animals,concentrating large populations of stressed and potentially diseased dogs in close quarters. More than 2,000 experts, including doctors, veterinarians and epidemiologists, have warned that the plan creates the 'perfect storm' for zoonotic outbreaks that could spread beyond national borders. India is estimated to have between 15 million and 60 million stray dogs, a population linked to ongoing rabies cases and public safety concerns. But scientists say removing these animals could backfire, as dogs currently act as a 'bio-buffer,' limiting the spread of disease-carrying wildlife such as rats.

The Supreme Court’s recent handling of the stray dog case is a chilling display of judicial bias and a complete disregard for the laws of the land. 🏛️ ​During the latest hearing, when Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal pointed out the "inhuman" reality of removing dogs without functional shelters, Justice Sandeep Mehta responded by saying, "On the next date, we will play a video... and ask you what is humanity." ​Let’s talk about that "Humanity": ​Is it "humane" to pass sweeping orders to "clear the streets" when the MCD has admitted it has ZERO functional shelter capacity? Justice Vikram Nath’s dismissive response—"Let them do it, we will consider"—is an open invitation for municipal authorities to engage in illegal culling and brutal displacement throughout December. ​The Judiciary is choosing ignorance over science and law: ​1️⃣ Defying Statutory Rules: The Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules 2023 are NOT suggestions; they are central laws. They mandate that dogs must be returned to their original territory. By ordering permanent removal and relocation, the Court is effectively telling local bodies to break the law. 2️⃣ Promoting Cruelty: Forcing territorial animals into overcrowded, non-existent "pounds" is a death sentence. It leads to starvation, disease, and horrific infighting. This isn't "public safety"—it's state-sanctioned cruelty. 3️⃣ Judicial Ignorance of Science: The Bench’s comments—like "space for animals, no space for humans"—ignore the "Vacuum Effect." Removing a sterilized, stable population only makes room for un-vaccinated, aggressive dogs to move in. The judges are fueling a panic that actually increases the risk of rabies and bites. 4️⃣ Apathy Toward Ground Reality: While the judges threaten to play videos of dog bites, they ignore the videos of municipal workers dragging dogs by their necks, dumping them in forests, or leaving them to die in cages. ​"Humanity" isn't found in populist, knee-jerk reactions that punish sentient beings for administrative failure. If the MCD failed to sterilize dogs for a decade, the punishment should be on the officials, not the animals. ​We don't need "large-hearted" comments or lectures on humanity from a Bench that seems intent on bypassing the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Yesterday, outside Anytime Fitness Gym in Rani Bagh, Delhi, a happy innocent soul who only knew how to love humans was poisoned by someone. This little one wagged his tail at everyone who passed by, asking for nothing more than a kind glance, a little food, or maybe a pat on the head. He never harmed anyone, never asked for much, just survived on trust and hope. And yet, he was met with one of the cruelest acts possible poison. The thought that someone could look into the innocent eyes of a voiceless being and still choose to end his life is beyond heartbreaking. It shatters the soul. His cries, his suffering, and his last breath will haunt us forever. This is not just the death of one dog. This is the death of compassion. The death of humanity. How far have we fallen that love and trust are met with betrayal and cruelty? Strays are not a problem. They are a part of our society, they are voiceless lives that depend on us. If feeding or coexisting feels like an issue, the only real solution is compassion, sterilization, and vaccination not brutality. We lost him forever. He crossed the rainbow bridge far too soon, not because of fate but because of human cruelty. And every time this happens, a piece of our hearts shatters, leaving scars that never heal.
