This is Jainism in South India . especially its profound, continuous, and distinctive presence in Karnataka and TamilNaduโ is one of the most remarkable chapters in Indian religious and cultural history.
Kannada-Brahmi and Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions (the earliest known writing system in South India) provide the strongest proof. Many of these are found in Jain rock shelters and caverns, especially around ancient Tamil centers like Madurai and its environs (e.g., Mangulam, Arittapatti, Alagarmalai, Sittanavasal area, Kilavalavu, etc.).
These inscriptions often record donations of rock-cut beds or shelters to Jain monks by kings, merchants, or householders. They are among the earliest lithic records of Jainism anywhere in India and predate the Mauryan period.
