Florida Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick just pulled off one of the boldest political moves of 2026.
Facing a likely House expulsion vote over 25 ethics violations and a federal indictment accusing her of stealing $5 million in COVID relief funds (diverted through her family’s company for personal use and her campaign), she resigned from Congress on April 21, literally minutes before the Ethics Committee was set to act.
But here’s the kicker: She filed her re-election paperwork for Florida’s 20th District four days earlier on April 17. Now, as a “private citizen,” she’s campaigning to get her old seat back in the Democratic primary.
No expulsion on her record. No congressional ethics hammer. Just a fresh shot at the ballot while pleading not guilty and denying the charges.
This isn’t accountability, it’s a masterclass in gaming the system. Taxpayers deserve better than politicians who allegedly loot disaster aid then treat Congress like a revolving door for their next grift.
