Liberals on twitter will really be like "you believe in systematic change? that pales in effectiveness to my strategy, winning an election" and then not win an election

The most obvious solution to AI-generated text is to grade it extremely poorly for the slop that it is. If you are not confident that you can spot AI every time, then introduce an oral defense element to your papers so that students have to explain the slop they did not write
Marc Porter Magee 🎓@marcportermagee

What’s it like in college right now when you actually want to learn while everyone—students, tutors and professors—is cutting corners with AI. “That was basically the end of our session,” Lahr said. “I had a crashout about that afterwards because I was like, Why am I even here?”

@CraigGaIIagher I’m saying educators as a collective don’t have the same control over grading and retention practices they used to

@teachbk Sorry, are you suggesting most faculty don't control what grades students earn in their classroom?

@CraigGaIIagher I mean, sure. But you’re assuming a degree of autonomy that frankly doesn’t exist for most

@teachbk As with anything, I suggest they do it honestly, professionally, and transparently and force college administrators to admit why they cannot do that

@CraigGaIIagher Sure, but other teachers/professors in other campuses face this reality- how do you suggest they fail students under those circumstances

@teachbk That problem pre-dates AI and is driven by retention anxiety. On my campus, there is a constant tension between the nursing program, which fails students all the time with the administration's blessing, and the liberal arts programs which need to put students on PIPs first

@CraigGaIIagher What do we do about the fact that many educators are not allowed to fail students anymore

@philosofoxthedj Massachusetts doesn't seem to have this problem to the same extent. A couple of high profile leftish politicians like Ed Markey, Ayanna Pressley, and Michelle Wu

@CraigGaIIagher Single party states are run by people who want power, not ideologues. Not a strong moral foundation.

@keithdorejel Not sure if you intended this, but the historical accounting will not regard Biden's complicity in the Gaza genocide as trivial but instead central to the collapse of support for the party. Every day since the campaign began has only vindicated those who stood on principle

I think when historians look back at the 2024 election in later years all the stuff we are fighting about now will seem trivial. The storyline is going to be this unprecedented situation where the nominee had to drop out due to cognitive impairment and there was no recovering.
