Before the World Cup kicks off here next month, watch U.S. Against the World and meet the @USMNT. You don’t need to be into soccer. If you care about pressure, sacrifice and young guys giving everything to make the country proud, this is for you. HBO Original. Now on HBO Max.

Whenever there is a documentary made about the 2026 World Cup, this video should be the opening scene

HBO did a documentary leading up to this World Cup and it’s on MAX. It’s five episodes and they dropped it in May. It’s just like hard knocks, but it chronicles from the 2022 WC in Qatar to now. It’s called “U.S. against the world: Four years with the men’s national team.” It’s really good.

In August 2016, I left the NFL Network. At the time, I wasn’t sure I was done being an NFL insider. I worked really hard to get there. No journalism degree. No traditional path. Somehow, against pretty long odds, I’d become one of the handful of national on-air insiders covering the NFL. Dream come true, right? I loved parts of it. Breaking news was a rush. Competing against the best in the world like @AdamSchefter was a rush. Building real sources and earning trust was a rush. But I also knew something was missing. I wanted to tell stories with more depth and care. I wanted to spend time with people in a way that breaking news doesn’t really allow. I wanted to understand not just what happened, but what it cost. Who it shaped. What it meant. So the original idea was pretty simple: keep breaking news on the NFL, but also start producing more human stories. Then life kept pulling us further toward the stories. Janina and I didn’t go to film school. We didn’t have some master plan. We just believed there was room to make sports stories that felt more human, more patient, more emotionally honest. Stories that didn’t flatten people into transactions, stats, mistakes, rumors, wins, losses, or whatever the loudest version of the internet wanted them to be that day. In 2016, I knew absolutely nothing about soccer. I didn’t really start learning the sport until 2019.l when we met Tyler Adams. Now, almost ten years after leaving NFL Network, we’re in Seattle documenting our second FIFA World Cup with the @USMNT. That sentence is still hard for me to process. U.S. Against the World is, to this point in our lives, the fullest manifestation of everything we dreamed @ParkStories could be. A big, bold, deeply human story about pressure, family, pain, belief, failure, resilience, and a group of guys trying to do something meaningful together. Giving everything they have to make our country proud, at a time when we desperately need to be brought closer together. It’s about soccer, obviously. But it’s also about the part of life all of us recognize: the low moments, the doubt, the noise, the waiting, the getting back up, the people who love us through it, and the hope that maybe the hard road is shaping us into something better. That’s what we’ve always wanted to make. Not content. Not access for access’ sake. Not sports wallpaper. Stories that move people. Stories that help us see each other more clearly. Stories that make the world feel a little less cynical and a little more connected. I’m really proud of what we’ve built. I’m proud we bet on ourselves. I’m proud we kept going when the path made no sense on paper. I’m proud we got to make this with people we love and respect. I’m proud of our team. I’m proud of Janina. I’m proud of the trust these players and families gave us. And I’m incredibly thankful to everyone who has supported us along the way. Everyone who watched. Shared. Texted. Called. Posted. Told a friend. Told us the show moved them. Told us they saw these guys differently after watching. That means more than you know. As we sit here in Seattle, getting ready for the U.S. to play Australia tomorrow night, I can’t imagine being anywhere else. THIS is the dream. And we’re really grateful we got to share it with you. U.S. Against the World is streaming now on HBO Max.

Hosting my first LinkedIn Live next Monday, and it'll be a great one. Four years ago, betting on a documentary series about the USMNT was not an obvious call. @RandGetlin made it anyway - 300 production days, 48 rights negotiations, and seven figures in licensing costs before a single network said yes. The USMNT just beat Paraguay 4-1. They play Australia in Seattle tomorrow. North America now has World Cup Fever. Monday, I'm sitting down with Rand live to talk about what that bet actually looked like from the inside - the access, the rights, the storytelling decisions, and what the World Cup means for the future of soccer, media, and culture in the USA. June 22 | 11 AM ET / 8 AM PT Part of the road to The Global Game Summit - July 15, Newark, NJ. Rand will be one of our featured guests. Sign up at the link below for Monday's live talk. Free for anyone to join.
