Just visited my first encampment, at Penn since I happen to be in town. Gonna do a little thread of my impressions. First, as you can see, ordinary campus life carries on around it undisturbed.

Threats to academic freedom at Penn reached alarming new heights today. Unelected trustees with no academic expertise are attempting a hostile takeover of the core academic functions of the University of Pennsylvania. 🧵 Philly Inquirer has the story: inquirer.com/education/marc…

Health Care Workers and War in the Middle East After extensive editing and fighting to get the word “Palestine” in the manuscript our letter is finally published in @JAMA_current We call all health care workers to speak up, protect health care workers and release all 40 of them who were abducted by Israel. To the Editor As physicians who worked in many hospitals in Gaza, we are deeply concerned about the recent Viewpoint titled “Health Professionals and War in the Middle East.”1 The night following the publication of this article, the Israeli military conducted large-scale attacks on Gaza’s hospitals, including Al-Rantisi (the only pediatric cancer center in Gaza) and Gaza Psychiatric and Al-Shifa hospitals (the largest hospitals in Gaza). These attacks killed and injured patients and health care workers, and internally displaced refugees. Since October 7, Israel targeted a total of 135 health care facilities, and 21 hospitals and 47 health care centers are no longer operational. More than 200 health care workers, including 16 on duty, were killed, and 53 ambulances were destroyed.2 The Viewpoint1 muddied the moral intuitions held by many of us that attacking hospitals, infrastructure, and health care workers is wrong. In so doing, this Viewpoint both slowed down the calls against these attacks and implicitly endorsed the attacks themselves. This goes against our Hippocratic oath to do no harm and violates international law.3 The Viewpoint author suggested a physician needs a political or military science degree to have a moral standing on this situation. However, the preservation of life and sanctity of hospitals where innocent people are sheltering is not complicated. No such degrees are needed to know that bombing hospitals and disproportionately killing innocent civilians is unethical. We believe that putting this question up for debate in a peer-reviewed medical journal is abhorrent and harmful. Dr Wynia reiterated thoroughly debunked Israeli propaganda floated since at least 2008, claiming that militants hide or launch their attacks from Gaza’s hospitals and use human shields. Israel’s military has never provided credible evidence for these claims, and independent investigators found them to be unsubstantiated. These claims are also inconsistent with the firsthand experiences of the authors of this letter, who have many years of experience working at hospitals in Gaza. We have never come across militants operating from within a hospital or restricting access to certain hospital areas. The Israeli army has lied about events to justify its actions. Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh’s murder is an example where Israel was caught repeatedly lying about its responsibility.4 As of December 1, more than 250 health care workers have been killed in Gaza and West Bank, including 92 physicians and medical students. The Israeli army has abducted 26 Palestinian health care workers including the director general of Shifa Hospital.5 Osaid Alser, MD, MSc; Mads Gilbert, MD; Tarek Loubani, MD Corresponding Author: Osaid Alser, MD, MSc, Faculty of Medicine, Islamic University of Gaza, 4 Sena’a St, Gaza Strip, occupied Palestinian territory. “As historians and anthropologists of science and technology, we too feel driven to identify and challenge how MIT programs aid and benefit from settler-occupation, militarization, and genocide, both past and present.” A statement from a collective of graduate students in HASTS.

As Institute administrators threaten the free expression of those who protest a genocide being aired and applauded on live TV, many MIT @StudentsOfHASTS wrote a statement of condemnation: thetech.com/2023/11/30/aga…

Remember how the #SpotifyWrapped story format was invented by a 21-year old Black design intern named Jewel Ham who presented the idea on her last day & then never really got credit for it? We remember. Anyway, we love year-end lists at SCA. What were you favorites this year?

A reminder: white phosphorus burns at nearly 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit – high enough to melt metal. It burns humans to the bone and is illegal to use in civilian areas. This is the type of weapon Israel is using on a children's hospital in Gaza and it won't make headlines.
