NCHC was essentially formed due to the B1G being created...little did the B1G know that their vision of their own hockey conference, which many felt would dominate college hockey, created the powerhouse @TheNCHC has become. Be careful what you wish for.

To be fair, even when North Dakota isn't in the frozen four, their fans overwhelmingly travel to watch it. The dedication is unmatched. I have done 8 frozen fours and you almost always see more Nodak jerseys and colors than any.

January 30th, 1982: The Water Bottle Incident To really understand this one, we first need to set the table; as was covered yesterday, NoDak and Wisconsin are at the top of college hockey and the rivalry has never been more bitter. The Sioux had a reputation for being a mean, physical bunch, and they used it to their advantage. The venue for this brawl, the Dane County Coliseum, was widely regarded at the time as one of the wildest environments with some of the rowdiest fans in college puck. The fans sat almost on top of the benches, and they weren't shy. With the Badgers up 3-0, NoDak forward Cary Eades skated past the Wisconsin bench when Badger John Newberry squirted him in the face with a water bottle (the second time that night he did it to Eades). Eades promptly entered the UW bench to "chat" with Newberry where he was met with a punch from Pat Eithier that set off a powder keg. They fought in the benches, on the ice and in the stands. At one point, a Sioux player and Badger rolled into the Beer Garden where a UW band member dumped a pitcher of beer into the NoDak player's face. The fight set a WCHA record for the number of suspensions arising from one incident. A scuffle that perfectly embodies how these teams feel about eachother, it's one you really just need to watch (and listen to) to appreciate:

So apparently yesterday was the five year anniversary of the 5OT game Leah Hextall and I called at the Fargo regional. Honored to have called the longest and one of the most iconic games in NCAA tourney history.

@RyanStieg Michigan State (because the committee was afraid of having an all NCHC Frozen Four), Denver and Duluth.

Michigan, Michigan State, North Dakota and Western Michigan would be the dream Frozen Four for ESPN. UMD, Wisconsin, Denver and Quinnipiac would be the nightmare

How many of these players have experienced Hockey East championship weekend with 32,000+ fans in an NHL building and then raised a banner with their team name on it into the rafters of that NHL building? There is no better conference championship than @hockey_east at TD.

@Johnubacon Why are east coast fans so upset when their teams have to travel west. It is OK for all the Midwest teams to go east. Want a better location, EARN IT with a higher seed!!

The NCAA men's hockey tournament leadership continues to prove itself to be one of the dumbest ever assembled. No campus rinks, far-flung sites where locals are indifferent, and brackets like this. Don't ever change, NCAA!
