Greek is a very broad term we actually take from Latin Graecus used to refer to the Roman's immediate Greek neighbors in Italy to the south of the Romans in place such as Sicily, Calabria, and Apulia. The Romans adopted the word from Γραικός which in Greek refers to a specific tribe or subgroup from a place called Graia and/or a tribe called the Graii who colonized that region of Italy. The Greeks refer to themselves as Hellenes and Greece itself as Hellas. Hellen was of course the famous princess kidnapped by Paris of Troy in Homer's Iliad. However that is not the Hellen from which the Greeks name themselves. Hellen was before that a mythical ancestor of the 4 principle Greek tribes or ethnicities Aeolians, Dorians, Achaeans, and Ionians. Or perhaps a title of the high priests of Zeus before being spread to all Zeus' worshippers. There are a lot of different linguistic theories as to how and why the Greeks started calling themselves that.

I did a very long thread on Roman history starting several years ago and now I want to do one on another pillar of Western history and culture the Greeks. Greek civilization is among the oldest Indo-European cultures in the world and the oldest culture that still informs large parts of our own culture, language, laws, customs, government, and ideals today. The Greeks experienced their golden age civilizationally around 300 BC but through the Roman Empire spread their ideas far and wide. The Greeks had a saying about Rome "conquered we conquer" Today we still tell their stories and myths such as the Iliad, Odyssey, Jason and the Argonauts, Perseus and Medusa, use their philosophical frameworks from such authors as Aristotle, Socrates and Plato, rely on their political and social organization for our own governments. Build our architecture to mimic theirs, use parts of their language in our scientific and medical pursuits to name types and concepts and much more.
