@IceTrainerBen I’m not so sure about the rest, 8-9 are certainly different from each other, and 7 shares a lot with both the generations before and after it.
My annoying take will be that 7 was actually good and was on the handhelds so it can join 3-6 despite being pretty different :)

@IceTrainerBen I would say gen 1-2 is certainly a two parter generation.
The next group id make would be 3-6 where Pokemon definitely found its formula and stuck with it. Grid based, 8 gyms and elite 4, comically evil teams, proper box legendary trios, 2 fossil lines per gen… so on.

Okay so how do yall mentally divide pokemon gens?
For me, Gen 1 and 2 are the “originals”
Gens 1 thru 4 are “classic pokemon”
Gens 5 is a weird limbo where it doesn’t feel classic or modern. Feels very unique in its identity
Gens 6-9 are “modern pokemon”

@Peko_girlboss Even though i’m a super big Gardenia fan I often associate her with Turtwig just as much as with her Roserade. Although it’s probably because the anime has her use Turtwig a lot more. Not that she gets much merch :(

it's always weird to me when a characters ace pokemon isn't the one they're the most associated with
like, acerola and mimikyu are made for each other, but her actual ace is palossand
Same with elesa and her infamous emolga's, nobody ever thinks about the zebstrika

Remember that june direct a couple months after the first mario movie where they announced a boatload of new mario games. There was mario rpg remake, luigi's mansion 2 hd, peach showtime, warioware move it, and mario wonder all in a single direct

@Whimsicast Nothing new to say but every time I see HGSS era cards I can’t help but appreciate how much the cards look like they belong together. Even with different art styles each deck looks like one art piece. I don’t think the game has replicated the feeling since.

A little side project that I was working on for a few years just finished.
Pieced together the 3 theme decks from 2011 PTCG Online. Basic Green, Basic Red, and Basic Blue.

Smaller blocks mean less bulk as only 10-20% of the cards are playable anyways most of the time, and also likely means more cards per set can be printed thus more product for everyone.
“Worst year” just means smallest block. Don’t fall for this ‘sensational’ wording.

Fun fact I learned while researching my latest video: 2026 is shaping up to be the worst year for Pokemon cards in recent memory. With rotation this month we're losing 1,000 cards, but we're only on pace for 500 new cards this year.
