The threat was lambasted by experts who correctly pointed out that it would tank the economy. Despite Trump's claims to the contrary, it would be American consumers who end up footing the bill as companies pass the cost off on them. The Post's Jeff Stein reports that three anonymous sources have stated that Trump backpedaling on this issue "would jettison a key aspect of Trump’s campaign pledge, at least for now" but "no decisions have been finalized and that planning remains in flux." "Preliminary discussions have largely focused on several key sectors that the Trump team wants to bring back to the United States," Stein wrote. "Those include the defense industrial supply chain (through tariffs on steel, iron, aluminum and copper); critical medical supplies (syringes, needles, vials and pharmaceutical materials); and energy production (batteries, rare earth minerals and even solar panels)," he added.
