@ascetic_shadow every system is just one striding push, like ice skating

since nobody asked, here’s my theory: this school’s nurse found a scale removal sandblasting outfit in the phonebook, and asked if they calibrated scales and they probably just said yes, and then they did it year after year and collected checks

Is "capital" the thing or the ownership structure of the thing? x.com/SurenVynn/stat…
Vynn@SurenVynn

@Rusty_Swarf In the case of the Malay lords, it was more a matter of sovereignty rather than capital. But capital is also what secured their sovereignty.

@leashless a 2x2 is beginning to suggest itself here. There's Material Capital, including land, and "Conceptual Capital," including IP and "the reins of the system." Then there's active capital (proven to be capital by being in use) and "latent capital" which can be disputed.

@SurenVynn Thank you. I have a longstanding interest in the way the term "capital" has evolved to cover more and more intangible cases.

Capital as "securitized rights to trade flows."
Rusty@Rusty_Swarf

@leashless Now the predominant form of capital is something more like: "control of the legal structures that dictate who holds the rights to payments based on nebulous concepts like IP, and the laundering of resource extraction through supranational corporations."

"it's a 'Princess and the Pea' problem" Perfect way to put it. 👌 This is my first time hearing about Shigeo Shingo, but I'm fascinated. I'll have to read more about his specific designs. Yes, yes, I'm harping on the safety death spiral, but these design approaches obviously have benefits too, esp. as it pertains to open source technology- "how can I get many people to adopt this idea/ technology".

@leashless Now purchasing the fruits of that capability is assumed to be a triviality. Odd how food went one way and housing went the other.

@leashless This state of affairs all seems downstream of insanely cheap food. The ancient idea of capital is all about "fertile land and the ability to defend it."

War is not what it used to be. War cannot capture economic value any more. But it can destroy it. The chaos unleashed can propagate around the world, as fast as a shockwave or a traffic jam forming on a highway. Some of screenshots from a political paper I circulated in 2024.
