On this Good Friday, we kneel before the Cross in sorrow and awe. We remember the suffering Jesus Christ willingly endured to redeem the world and save each one of us. And even in His final agony, His words were mercy:
“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” What a powerful reminder to forgive, to carry our cross, and to follow Him faithfully. Today is solemn. Today is sacred. And today, I am deeply grateful for the mercy and salvation won for us on the Cross. He died for us. He lives for us. And because of Him, we are forgiven. ✝️

This is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to write. After going through Giselle’s full history, her recent veterinary evaluation, and most importantly what she is showing us every single day … the decision has been made to let her cross the rainbow bridge this spring. A while ago, we had her thoroughly vetted. We learned she is approximately 20 years old (not 12), and has severe cataracts in both eyes. Her vision is almost completely gone, she isn’t seeing the world clearly anymore, just shapes and shadows through a fog. When you pair that with how reactive and overwhelmed she is, it starts to explain a lot … but it doesn’t make it easier. Over these past few months, I’ve watched a steady decline in her, after so much growth when she first arrived. She is harder to handle. Quicker to panic. I watched her try to throw herself over a gate because of something as simple as a human being standing in her vicinity. That isn’t a horse being “difficult”, that is a horse who is scared, exhausted, and running out of ways to cope. This decision was not unanimous. Our team is divided, and I want to be very honest about that. Behavioural euthanasia is one of the absolute worst conversations you can ever have as an organization, and this was not made lightly. There were a lot of opinions, a lot of back and forth, and a lot of emotion on all sides. But I need to say this clearly for everyone who is reading it: this is a decision that I advocated for. Because I see her every day. I see the strain in her eyes. I see how hard she tries to be okay, and how she just … can’t. I see the moments that don’t show up through videos or words I can put on a page. The ones that sit heavy in your mind long after you walk away from the barn for the night, because you know she’s hurting in ways you can’t fix. Could we have done more? Maybe. We could have chased more diagnostics. More tests. More medications. We could have spent thousands sending her to another trainer, when she’s already been to one in the past. Tried again. And again. But at what cost to her? She has already had years of trying to learn trust in her previous home, before coming to us. And even then, it was extremely fragile. Now we’re asking her to navigate a world she can barely see anymore, in a body and mind that are constantly on edge, and full alert. At some point, “trying more” stops being about helping and starts being about not being ready to let go. I hate that this decision caused tension within our team. I hate that I stand firm in a way that then hurts people I care about their opinions and their trust. But I will never, ever hate that I stood up for her. Because she needed someone to be her voice when she was too tired to keep fighting to be understood. Giselle loves one thing without hesitation — her grain. So that’s what she’s going to get. All of it. As much as she wants (within reason, no colic episodes allowed). No stress, no expectations, no fear. No pushing, no forcing contact. And when the time comes, it will be on a good day. She will leave this world knowing fullness instead of fear, calm instead of chaos, and peace instead of constant worry. Even if not everyone agrees, you can put your blame on me if you feel it’s not the right choice, I will bear that weight. ❤️‍🩹 This is absolutely not the ending I wanted for her. But it is the one that she deserves. 💔

Elderly #mustangs in kill pens, who’ve seen the worst of humanity, cannot imagine the thousands of compassionate people, who acted to stop their suffering. They cannot imagine the green hills and oak gullies in Santa Ynez, where they will soon recover and heal with other seniors.
