It was an absolute pleasure to be a guest of Minister @ISeruiratu at the @Rfmf_Media Camp in Suva yesterday. We discussed with senior officers opportunities for closer collaboration between the RFMF and @UNSWCanberra in university education of the cadets.

This impressive, world-class facility is enabling Fiji to operate their sovereign capabilities at a much higher level. The Vuvale Maritime Essential Services Centre will allow the Fiji Navy, Police, Customs, Fisheries and Rescue Coordination Centre to be managed from one central facility. It was an honour to join Prime Minister Rabuka to officially open the Centre today — because a more secure, safe Fiji means a more secure, safe Pacific region.

@cawnac_naca I agree. The atmosphere was electric!!! Congratulations RKS!!! We need a stadium able to host international games. One around Nadi would be ideal given the connectivity.

The intensity of the crowd tonight was immense. I’ve been to many rugby games. Tonight’s atmosphere was amazing. We are now ready for a 30000 capacity stadium. Fiji deserves one. Let’s all work together to get this going. Together we rise. Toso Viti.

@FijiNavy This is an excellent and an overdue initiative. Maritime Domain Awareness is a high priority activity for Fiji as noted in the NSDR, and MESC provides the platform for improved border surveillance.

In a historic 🇫🇯🇳🇿 defence partnership milestone focused on strengthening maritime security & border protection, two Bluebottle Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USV) have been deployed to #Fiji! The two Bluebottle USVs were launched by Minister of Defence & Veteran Affairs Hon. @piotikoduaduafj, HE @C_Darlow_NZ, @NZNavy RADM Golding & CDRE Natuva The Bluebottle USVs will be under direct @FijiNavy tasking from the Maritime Essential Services Centre (MESC) in coordination with partner maritime border agencies including Customs, Police, Fisheries and Immigration to test the MESC’s functionality and integrated air-sea operations for enhanced border protection and maritime domain awareness This milestone also reflects the Fiji Navy’s evolving and unified approach to addressing national issues by leveraging strategic partnerships and technology while investing in its people and workforce culture realignment to enhance deterrence, detection, and disruption of illegal activities within Fiji’s maritime domain #FijiNavy50

RFNS Savenaca safely returned early this morning after assisting the catamaran SV Scout, which was experiencing steering difficulties due to broken rudders and a fouled propeller. This occurred in heavy swells over 80 miles southeast of Kadavu. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Fiji, based at MESC in Lami, received the request for help and subsequently deployed RFNS Savenaca. The yacht was also low on fuel and rations, highlighting the urgency for assistance. RFNS Savenaca successfully towed the yacht into Suva Harbour, and both sailors were found to be in good health. While we are relieved that the sailors are safe, we urge all yacht operators in the region to be vigilant. It's essential to monitor weather conditions and maintain their vessels properly, as this incident marks the fourth case involving yachts in the past few weeks. Safety should always be the top priority.

@FijiNavy FHS has been providing essential services for maritime and national security. It is time we equip our future mariners with the skills and technology to serve the nation even better. The NSDR provides some clear directions in this.

World Hydrography Day is commemorated on 21 June to promote awareness of hydrography's vital role in advancing our understanding of the world’s oceans and seas. In 2025, the global theme is “Seabed Mapping: Enabling Ocean Action”. Hydrography underpins nearly all maritime activities. It plays a critical role in enabling the sustainable use of marine resources, safeguarding the marine environment, upholding maritime sovereignty, and facilitating the secure and efficient movement of goods and services across the oceans. The 2025 theme underscores hydrography’s importance in enabling data-informed decision-making for effective ocean governance. Scientific understanding and mapping of the seafloor are essential to preserving Fiji’s marine environment, sustainably managing its resources, and advancing the country’s national blue economy. The Fiji Hydrographic Service (FHS), operating under the Republic of Fiji Navy, is the government-mandated authority responsible for hydrographic services across Fiji’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). In partnership with the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO), the FHS delivers nautical charts and publications that support safe navigation within Fijian waters. communities. Since its establishment in March 1970, the FHS has evolved from a modest government unit into a capable service able to conduct hydrographic surveys to international standards. The revitalization of the Fiji National Hydrographic Committee (NHC)—after more than two decades of inactivity—now provides a platform for cross-ministerial collaboration, aligning hydrographic priorities with national development strategies. As the Fiji Navy approaches its 50th anniversary, it reaffirms its commitment to advancing hydrographic services in support of Fiji’s maritime development and economic growth. In a nation as ocean-dependent as Fiji, the strategic relevance of hydrography cannot be overstated. The FHS acknowledges its modest origins in 1970 and remains dedicated to ensuring navigational safety and supporting Fiji’s blue economy into the future.
