But that was not precise enough. The truth is more specific, and perhaps more controversial: I am a professional advocate for Israel. I was born to Lebanese and Syrian Muslim parents, yet I chose to stand publicly and unapologetically with the Jewish state. The real question is not what I do, but why. I grew up in Lebanon surrounded by sectarian hostility, with communities convinced of each other’s flaws. It pushed me away from dogma and toward questioning. Later, living across Europe, I realized you can leave the Middle East physically, but not mentally. Its conflicts follow you. I came to believe that lasting peace in the region requires reconciliation with Israel, not endless obsession with its destruction. That conviction led me back to university, where I studied Islamic and Jewish Studies in Germany. There, I developed deep admiration for Judaism, for the Jewish people, and for Israel: not because they are perfect, but because of their resilience, continuity, and strength against extraordinary odds. I knew supporting Israel publicly would cost me relationships and distance me from parts of my past. It did. Yet I chose this path deliberately. On October 7, I put everything aside and went to Israel, not as an observer, but out of solidarity. I wanted to stand with people I had come to see as family.
