We have reached a stage in our country where there are only two sides to every issue and every incident. Each side lives in protected echo chambers which are provided with a curated set of ‘facts’ and/or video footage from certain camera angles that are consistent with the preexisting views and conclusions of that side.
Individuals are ‘convicted’ of serious crimes in the headlines, by politicians appealing to their base, and ultimately in the minds of the public, or they are exonerated, before all of the facts are in and a detailed investigation has been completed.
This is not good for America. We need to go back to a world where we suspend judgment and await the conclusions of a detailed investigation before we convict or exonerate. Let’s not forget that a man is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Rushing to judgment helps no one and harms us all. It also greatly elevates the temperature, which keeps potential targets of law enforcement and those who enforce our laws on edge, massively increasing the risk to all.
We need to take a deep breath and reserve judgment before this gets even more out of control.

Two conversations this weekend make me think that there's a vibe shift afoot in Silicon Valley around what one should work on and what is worthwhile.
Culturally, it feels like the moment is ripe for new frameworks:
• Davos expert morality is stale and discredited.
• It's also apparent that the "just be super based" Counter-Enlightenment is not really an answer. (Yes, woke went too far, but simply inverting it doesn't work.)
• EA is no longer the automatic default for smart people.
• There's increasing skepticism of slot and slop machine dynamics.
Overall, "what is worthy and valuable?" feels like it's becoming more central.

I think Ezra can go more upscale than West Elm given how many copies Abundance has sold

@drgurner downstream institutions + individuals have to realize that there are relatively "under-credentialed" folks who were priced-out of some status markers not filtered out ... some of the best people I've worked with are BA/BS-only, or went to "meh" U with killer side gig or project

There's dark talent around the world, from the Midwest to the Middle East. Backing this talent is the right thing to do morally and the smart thing to do economically.

the amount of genius sitting untapped in people who were born in the wrong place at the wrong time is probably the biggest waste in human history undiscovered because opportunity isn't distributed by merit, but by geography + luck love this quote from @balajis on "dark talent"

“Mission statements” are usually useless.
They sound nice but do nothing. But at @hanoverpark we found 2 values that move the needle:
1) Egoless Execution
You need an ego to believe you’ll build a generational company. But ego is the enemy of execution.
I don’t care who is right or wrong. But the second you start protecting your ego, you’re playing defense and losing momentum.
Egoless execution means - “We don’t care about who’s right. We care about winning as fast as possible.”
2) Maniacal Urgency
Every “reasonable” timeline is a trap. If you don’t challenge it, your company dies in slow motion.
We hate it when someone tries to schedule a meeting for next week instead of the next hour. We make lightning fast reversible decisions. We ship fast. We iterate faster. We only have one speed… now.
