Looking through the catalog of clothes they’ve made, the sin here was not being foreign-made, but an incredible lack of taste. If these items cater to the demographic, it says more about them than the tailor. AFAICT serious people don’t want VC Daddy quotes on their clothes like football players with ads, Mafiosi, or Chinese nu-money with Italian brand names plastered on everything. These clothes were made for the self-referential commentariat, not the builders. A more serious and tasteful fashion trend for Sensitive Young Engineers would be something like normalizing stylish but practical workwear, or cargo khaki shirts, or something dignifying - even a lazy retvrn to the Apollo NASA look would be an improvement on default styles today, and orders of magnitude better than the Silicon Valley norm of hoodies or Patagonia vests. Of course, I am excluding “software engineers” from this discussion - they can continue to dress like adolescents if they so choose.

Skill Issue - clothes for technologists@skillissuesf

I'm sure X will be thrilled to hear that we're going to shut our brand. Yes, we made a mistake in launching a Reindustrialize sweater that was made in Portugal, but we truly did look for 3 months for a factory in the US that would make it at 50 MOQ and couldn't find one. Our plan was to launch it and see if there was enough demand for it to justify a larger MOQ. Also, we thought that in the process of doing this, there was a good chance we'd unsurface a factory that could do it. (Which we did. It seems the only factory in the US that can do this has a website that says they're a fabric company.) Our brand was about a love for technologists and wanting to make them look better. All the nastiness of the past week destroyed that for us. Tech bros are clearly not supportive of anyone else but other tech bros in building start-ups. Instead of a positive, constructive, builder-supportive, "Hey, here's a US factory that can make your next run," we were subject to a slew of abuse. I lost my life savings doing this, which should make everyone happy. (Yes, I'm Croatian.) I need to go get a job now. We have piles of inventory: all the next planned drops of clothes we made to honor tech culture that we're now just going to give away. Doing a thread of the clothes now. DM us your size and address if you want something, but please say something kind. We don't want to contribute any more negativity to the world.

I have never been more motivated to learn Japanese just to be able to meet them halfway, since they all learn English. Maybe I will even teach them some Doitshu. The New Axis Rises!

Seriously, if you are this concerned about fashion as a “technologist”, you are not spending your time wisely - which means you are probably not the one doing the work. Off to the luncheon

This is cavitation inside a piston diaphragm pump. Most engineers spend their entire careers hearing this destructive phenomenon. Almost none ever get to see it with their own eyes. When pressure drops below a critical threshold, liquid instantly flashes into vapor, creating thousands of microscopic bubbles throughout the system. It happens in milliseconds, invisible to the naked eye in standard metal pumps. But when pressure rises again, those bubbles don't just disappear quietly. They collapse violently, sending shockwaves rippling through the metal components. The result is catastrophic. Valves get destroyed. Seals get shredded. Pump chambers get hollowed out from the inside, one microscopic implosion at a time. Cavitation is one of the most destructive forces in industrial fluid systems, responsible for equipment failures that cost thousands of dollars per incident. Engineers have studied it for decades through sensors, pressure readings, and the telltale sounds it makes. But they've never been able to watch it happen in real time. Until now. The clear plexiglass head on this LEWA pump changes everything. For the first time, pump engineers can observe cavitation as it occurs, watching the bubble formation and violent collapse that destroys their equipment. It's like finally seeing the invisible enemy that's been wreaking havoc on industrial systems. This is what happens when engineering innovation meets visualization technology. Sometimes the most powerful breakthroughs come from simply making the invisible visible.

There is nothing more tempting (and more dangerous) than tunnel vision. The reverence for routine, the fetishization of flow, the ritualization of repetition, the process of homeostatic regulation and normalization Typical days lead to typical lives. The morphology of one’s time and space is independent of the morphology of being. Routine or no routine, does not matter. There are counterexamples either way. In general, creativity and compartmentalization are at odds, at the edges. Things that do not take over your life have no place in your life. It follows that nothing that has ever existed has a place in your life. The set of all possible things that can exist is inordinately larger than the set of things that do exist or have existed long enough to be named and legitimized and digested in medianesque resolution parlance. Tunnel visioning is not merely romantic, it is romance. Of course, it is anti exploratory, seductive, and so on. In a sense, executive function is “selling your soul to the devil”. You might be able to take it back though, that is indeed the gamble of sequential processing. One could say, is th3 difference between “war and peace” and executive function not just frequency? It’s all compartmentalized sequential processing anyway! But it is not so. Frequency has emergent effects. Switching in hours vs days, months, years, decades, etc, there are informational and depth effects to these things. The more switching there is, the greater shallowness. Compartmentalizing just does not work, since there is infinite mental poverty, profound shortage of bits, and you’re giving your most valuable bits away? So the ideal is extremely infrequent and exceptional, life or death only, switching. Tunnel in and out with extreme vigor like the legions of yore, and in time it all feels like a dream, because it is. Indeed, depending on the degree of compartmentalization and socialization, one’s dreams can have far greater informational content than waking life. Dreams are the most alone time most people get, and they spend it entirely traumatized and anchored to the past. Often, even this is not uninterrupted. In most cultures, sleep is looked down upon. No wonder they have no progress! The mind does not work on a 24 hour cycle. To ignore the circadian rhythm is the first act of creativity, of the inherently transhumanist rebellion that leads to the growth of knowledge. There is no greater and more seductive killer of creativity than the scheduled life. Hormonal rhythms provide a grounding and orientation, and there in one’s anxiety, along with sensitivity, is neutered. The focus is the beginning of the end. The calm is the passive. Calm and hysterical are informationally identical. Mess in space and time does not imply disorder, just as deviation does not imply degeneration. Everything is about standards, anchors (“a lot”, “a little”, etc. reveals more about the size of your ruler, no doubt imitated and inherited from culture, than the object of measurement). There is no good schedule and so on. The whole idea that there is, is coercive, the modern ten rules of health well being wealth or whatever floats your boat in your friend circle are just modern dressed up Ten Commandments. Extreme organization must necessarily appear like extreme chaos, it’s an iq / bits thing. You can’t even explain it, because to comprehend the explanation would require the working memory, i.e. the bits, and if the bits were there no explanation would be required. Also, it is surprising how much of the world is ruled by sexual anxiety, which is a wrapper on existential anxiety. It is the rule of the genes, a submission to their authority. Circadian and other hormonal rhythms are downstream. The desire to be desired is a desire for hive inculcation, to feel nominally safer (even though the gamma ray burst equivalent of cosmic event, which you could have been thinking about if you were not busy whatever-implicit-virtue-maxxing, …

had dinner with an old roommate who's been building his company for a few years. what became most striking is that he is now in a beautiful flow with his life. his days are devotionally repetitive: jiu jitsu at 7am, coffee, then work until 6pm. Spend time with his wife, read for a bit, then sleep. He tells me that his days are structured and predictable because that is how he does his best work. he says that he is no longer distracted, it is very easy to focus for long periods of time i felt something profound hearing this, because i have often felt that i need every day to be dynamic and unpredictable to feel satiated. but the person sitting in front of me is pouring all of his attention in the present moment, while my mind is fragmented somewhere between the past and the future, frothing with to-dos and what-ifs it felt increasingly obvious that while his routine looks boring from the outside, he is deeply interested in his life, and while my life may look interesting, I feel bored and distracted often, because my attention is shallow and thinly spread in comparison

I suspect the vibe of a person is transmitted to others through the resonant infrared light emitted in the sweat ducts, depending on individual differences & mood this frequency can vary 200 GHz to 700 GHz.. Since these are resonant frequencies, two people that overlap well in this range, will yield much stronger reactions in one another when exposed to their heat radiation / infrared light. This is non-trivial to measure, but doable. I would need maybe $10k - $30k I think the best name suggestion in the replies for the measurement unit is "vibes" especially if we scale it so that most people are split across where it goes from MegaVibes to GigaVibes.

There will be a day where we can quantity vibes. What would you call the measurement unit?
