It's the right time of year to start seeing Round-lobed Hepatica! Native to Eastern North America, this forest understorey species can have flowers that vary from pink, to blue, to white 😍

@chrisvanswaay Just curious, what location is being represented here in the graph? Are these European populations?

Trend in distribution ≠ trend in population. The graph shows how the Common Blue (P icarus, icarusblauwtje) expanded in NL (occupancy is rising), but population declined >50% since 1990 on Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects.

In a world-first, an international team of scientists demonstrated that Painted Lady butterflies (Vanessa cardui) flew at least 4,200 km over the ocean from West Africa to French Guiana, South America.

Flight period length may help to explain some of this variation! Butterflies with longer flight periods were more common in urban areas... like this painted lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui)! 3/3 All images: S. Rivest

Butterflies are present in cities! But the communities are species-poor, homogenized, and contain more non-native butterflies than surrounding rural areas. 🏙️🦋 2/3
