Defra told me “We are confident that our border posts have the sufficient capacity needed to handle the volume of checks required, while our inspectors have undertaken extensive training to ensure goods are treated safely and with care.”

Once they’ve got their own facility up and running (which government inspectors will visit to carry out checks) they’re considering charging other businesses to use their control point.

For @BBCFarmingToday yesterday, I visited Provender Nurseries, who have spent years and hundreds of thousands of pounds on creating their own control point - because of concerns about the new post-Brexit system of biosecurity checks.

It was great to get down to @HughLoweFarms for a look at this project, putting lightweight solar panels on polytunnels.

What struck me was the level of uncertainty -- even from an independent facility which the government will use to carry out checks. They don't know how busy things are going to get, and lorry drivers can already expect to wait for as long as 24 hours.
