Let’s not waste time. There is something disturbingly parasitic happening in modern intellectual culture. The phenomenon is not new, but it has become increasingly pronounced in an era of podcasts, newsletters, and algorithmically curated echo chambers. We’re witnessing an alarming attachment—not just to ideas—but to the personalities behind them. Not just to arguments, but to the authority of the arguer. Take Sam Harris. A man of precision, logic, and undeniable rhetorical skill. For years, Harris has positioned himself as a rationalist, an antidote to dogma, a lighthouse of clarity in stormy ideological seas. And for a time, he was exactly that. I found his early books bold. His critiques of religion and his defenses of secular morality brought a kind of mental rigor to public conversation that was sorely missing. But something’s changed—or maybe, more accurately, something has revealed itself. Harris today is no longer merely a thinker or provocateur. He has become a figurehead, a brand, a man whose very sentences are consumed like doctrine by a cadre of devout followers. Visit his Substack, tune into his podcast, or engage with his fans in any meaningful way and you’ll quickly find that critical engagement is not just unwelcome—it’s treated as heretical. Challenge him, even politely, and a swarm of intellectual hyenas descend. Not to debate. Not to discuss. But to eviscerate, humiliate, and intellectually posture you into silence. Their loyalty to Harris is not based on ideas but on an identification with his perceived intellect—and worse, with what that intellect signals about their own. Check out the rest of my essay titled "The Cult of the Credentialed: Sam Harris, Intellectual Snobbery, and the Death of Nuance"... open.substack.com/pub/thetacitfr… @elonmusk @jordanbpeterson @joerogan @ericweinstein @BretWeinstein @DouglasKMurray

That seems right to me. I’m not arguing we have strong evidence of non-human intelligence. My concern is that the default reaction hasn’t updated even as: - the data has improved - the number of credible observers has increased - and the category of “unexplained” has persisted The gap between “we don’t know what this is” and “there’s nothing here” still feels too large.

@TacitFrame UFOs are clearly a real problem and not nonsense. What is nonsense is the claim that they constitute strong evidence of non-human intelligence.

The dismissal of UFOs is starting to look irrational. The “UFOs are nonsense” position is starting to look intellectually lazy. We now have: - Navy pilots like David Fravor and Ryan Graves - Scientists like Avi Loeb -Testimony from people like David Grusch All pointing to something real that isn’t understood. You don’t have to believe in aliens. But dismissing everything at this point isn’t skepticism—it’s avoidance. I’ve seen things myself in 2017 and 2026 I still can’t explain. At what point do we admit the default position might be wrong? Full essay below. I’ve started doing a 36-hour fast every couple of weeks. No snacks. No noise. No constant cycle of eating. What I get on the other side: clearer thinking calmer mood better focus for screen-heavy work Add lifting again after a back injury + playing sports with my kids, and everything just works better. No hacks. No apps. Just removing some of the excess. I write about it below. I Stopped Eating for 36 Hours—and Started Thinking Properly Again open.substack.com/pub/thetacitfr…

Most political media is noise dressed up as insight. Piers Morgan shouts. Triggernometry postures. Meanwhile, The Rest Is Politics (UK & US) actually does something rare: it thinks. I wrote about Sam Harris recently and got some fair pushback. So I went back and tried to engage the strongest version of his argument properly. I still think something doesn’t hold — especially on where the limits actually are. One could suggest that many nations maintain a certain level of secrecy surrounding their military strength and capability. One could also suggest that despite having them, if it´s true, they never once used them. If they are teh deranged regime they are purported to be, why not?

You should be able to criticise any government on earth. China. Russia. Iran. The United States. So why does criticism of Israel trigger accusations of antisemitism so quickly? I’m not an expert on Iran. Most people loudly commenting online aren’t either. But when the US and Israel start bombing a country and retaliation begins across the region, we should at least ask some hard questions. Why now? What is the real objective? And what happens if this spirals into something far worse? Livramento’s great, but he can’t cross, can’t head and can’t stay fit. If Newcastle are to sell one of their two starting full-backs, it’s him all day, every day
Craig Hope@CraigHope_DM

🚨 Still no Tino Livramento contract talks & not expected before end of season, when Manchester City are set to firm up interest. Two years to run on deal. 🔍 What does this mean? And who are NUFC targeting? 👇 All answered in bumper Q&A 👇 dailymail.co.uk/sport/football…

I have experienced anxiety all my life. When I was her age I also exhibited certain behaviours that one could argue were attention seeking. This was more to prove to myself that I could and survive it. The idea of doing something that terrifies you in the hope that by doing it you won't be terrified any longer.

Eddie Howe is an incredibly likeable human being. He effuses for me what a leader should be and consistently demonstrates leader behaviour. He speaks clearly and thoughtfully. He always maintains a balanced view and doesn't get sucked into divisive or controversial discussions. Above all, he protects those he is in charge of leading. Whether or not he can take Newcastle to where they want to get to - not sure.

I remain on the fence when it comes to Eric. I am drawn to him in one sense because he certainly has charisma and speaks with an air of intelligence, and often speaks sense. On the other hand, similar to Jordan Peterson, at the end of listening to him for an hour or two, I am often confused or oblivious to any point he was trying to make.

US and Israel hit Iran and within hours everyone suddenly knows exactly what this means. Strength. Disaster. Justice. Escalation. Certainty everywhere. I’m not an Iran expert. I do think regimes like theirs are dangerous. I’m far less sure bombs weaken that danger rather than feed it. So I wrote something that asks questions instead of cheering. @DouglasKMurray War Again, Certainty Again open.substack.com/pub/thetacitfr…
