When talking about some of the best freshman performances in March Madness history, you canโt skip Marylandโs Kristi Toliver.
Crystal Langhorneโs back-to-back 30-point games propelled the Terps past the second round and Sweet 16, but it was Toliver who guided the team the rest of the way. She averaged (19.3) points, (3.7) rebounds, and (4.0) assists over Marylandโs final three wins, leading them to the programโs only national championship.
Before hitting that clutch three-pointer in the final seconds of the title game to force overtime, Toliver had already made a huge impact with 28 points and 6 assists in a 75โ65 overtime win against Utah in the Elite Eight. That performance was what got Maryland to the championship stage in the first place.
She scored a team-high 16 points in the championship game against Duke, finishing the tournament with 84 pointsโthe 11th most by a freshman in March Madness history. Her 12 assists in the first-round win are tied for the fifth most by a freshman, and her 35 total assists during the tournament remain the most ever by a freshman. ๐ช
