BREAKING: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says that you actually feel good about the failing Trump economy in your "heart of hearts" even if you're saying that you don't.
What do you think? Does he know better than you?
"Why aren't we seeing this sentiment? Why aren't people feeling better?" a reporter asked Bessent.
"Well, I, you know, I, when I was in the investment business, there are consumer surveys, but I used to look at what are the people really doing," said Bessent. "So at Treasury, we have loads of CEOs come through, whether they're in retail, credit card, the banks, and the consumer, while they may be sounding grim, is actually quite buoyant. So we are seeing spending has been very solid across most categories."
"So they might not feel good, but. Well, look, in their heart of hearts, they feel good. I'm not sure what they're telling the survey," he said with a straight face.
To point out the glaringly obvious here, conversations with CEOs are not a good metric for measuring the feelings of the American people about their finances. Of course people are still buying things. We need food, clothes, and transportation to survive. The problem is that everything is so damn expensive now due to Trump's harebrained tariffs and pointless Iran War that our money doesn't go nearly as far as it used to.
Americans may be spending money and enriching these CEOs' companies but our savings โ if they exist at all โ are rapidly dwindling. Meanwhile, Scott Bessent has a net worth of roughly $600 million. The price of bread could double, the price of milk could increase tenfold, and gas could go up by ten thousand percent, and it wouldn't make the smallest dent in his quality of living.
This is the same Bessent who said that the economic suffering inflicted by Trump's Iran War is just something that the American people must grin and bear in order to achieve some imagined long-term strategic goal. Here's an idea: how about we start actually taxing men like Bessent to make the rest of our lives a little easier?
