안녕하세요 존경하는 X동료 여러분 저는 지금 술을 완전히 끊은 지 1년 6개월째예요. 처음엔 그냥 한 달만 해보자 싶었는데 어느새 이렇게 됐네요. 솔직히 말하면 인생이 진짜 많이 달라졌어요. 그래서 오늘은 제 직접 경험을 바탕으로 술을 안 마시면 실제로 어떤 변화가 생기는지 자연스럽게 이야기해보려고 해요. 조금 길지만 천천히 읽어보시면 좋을 것 같아요. 제가 1년 6개월을 넘기면서 가장 먼저 느낀 건 몸이 진짜 달라진다는 거예요. 간 수치가 정상으로 돌아왔고요. 예전에 지방간이 좀 있었는데 지금은 많이 좋아졌지요. 혈압도 안정되고 중성지방도 떨어졌어요. 뭐 제일 놀라운 건 머리가 맑아진 거예요. 집중력도 좋아지고 기억력도 예전보다 확실히 나아졌어요. 아침에 일어나면 머리가 개운해서 하루가 가볍게 시작되더라고요. 수면도 훨씬 깊어졌어요. 술 마실 때는 새벽에 자꾸 깨고 그랬는데 지금은 거의 안 깨요. 피부도 붓지 않고 맑아졌고요. 빈 칼로리가 사라지니 체중 관리도 자연스럽게 되더라고요. 면역력도 올라간 느낌이에요. 예전보다 감기 걸리는 횟수가 확 줄었지요. 정신적으로도 변화가 컸어요. 불안감이 많이 줄었어요. 예전엔 스트레스 받으면 술부터 생각났는데 지금은 그런 생각이 거의 안 들어요. 감정 기복도 적어지고요. 자존감이 올라간 게 제일 크게 느껴져요. 술 없이도 충분히 잘 살 수 있다는 걸 18개월째 매일 확인하니까요. 인간관계도 더 좋아졌어요. 술로 인한 미안함이나 후회가 사라지니 진짜 소중한 사람들과 더 깊게 연결되는 느낌이 들어요. 삶의 질 자체가 올라간 게 느껴져요. 매달 술값이랑 다음날 피로로 날아가는 시간까지 생각하면 돈도 꽤 모이더라고요. 일할 때 집중력이 좋아지니까 생산성도 자연스럽게 올라가고요. 퇴근 후에도 에너지가 남아서 운동이나 취미도 시작하게 됐어요. 18개월이 되니 이제는 술을 안 마시는 게 제 삶의 일부가 됐어요. 처음엔 버티는 느낌이었는데 지금은 오히려 이게 더 편하고 자연스러워요. 저는 절대 모두가 금주해야 한다고 강요하고 싶지 않아요. 다만 한 번쯤 진지하게 도전해보는 건 정말 가치 있다고 생각해요. 한 달만 해보시든 3개월만 해보시든 1년을 넘겨보시든요. 그때 느끼는 변화는 생각보다 훨씬 클 거예요. 저처럼 1년 넘긴 분이나 이제 시작하려는 분 계시면 댓글로 이야기 나눠요. 궁금한 거 있으시면 언제든 물어보세요. 오늘도 건강하게 보내세요!

I actually don’t know the future I want. While abundance of everything sounds good on paper, I don’t know that humanity is made to handle it well. While nobody wants to go back to the days when mass starvation existed, people in general are happier when they have goals and more to work for, not less. I just don’t know if doubling down on leisures and luxuries will ultimately improve life or make it worse. That’s an honest question I can’t answer. I don’t think it’s as simple as saying we will all be better off without work or goals or ambitions to fulfill. Vacations are great because they are glimpses of something we can work hard to achieve more of, but I don’t know that endless vacations are good for the soul. I’ve already experienced this to a certain extent with AI. As a software developer, I used to take a lot of joy out of building something great and seeing it work in the real world. This past year I’ve been more productive than ever, yet I don’t take any joy out of it. I orchestrated it, but I didn’t really do it for myself. It’s a hard question to answer, and also while I agree we may all be able to have some of the same things as the ultra wealthy, just because we can all have penthouses doesn’t mean we can all have penthouses overlooking Central Park, per se. Abundance of some things is possible. Abundance of others, like property, isn’t. My questions more arise with the latter, how do we deal with that if we are living in a post-monetary world?

I respectfully disagree. It doesn’t address the sense of purpose issue. A lot of people go to work every day feeling needed. Like they matter. Take that away, and all you’re left with is unlimited free time, meaning more Netflix, video games, and consumption of X-rated content over doing something productive. I love my free time when I get it, but if I don’t work for it, I don’t appreciate it. Too much free time without any structure might not be the best thing for humanity.
