The Promise When I was young, my best friend lay beneath white lights at end of day. I left his floor and climbed upstairs to find my first love waiting there. Same white walls. Same stale air. Same dim lights and nurses stare. She was close, but past the door. Past visiting hours. Nothing more. I took that home, that quiet ache: how near can still be kept away. Then you came in, and life grew wide, warm with coffee and kids inside. Then days went hard, and you got ill. The world turned strange. The house went still. One bad night broke more than sleep. Glass on the floor. Words too deep. By dawn I stood with shard in hand, a piece of us I could not mend. Then came long months with miles and phones, two broken lives in separate homes. We spoke more true than we had in years, soft through the dark, stripped down and clear. Then came white halls and weeks of doors, late-night turns through guarded floors. But I was not that young man then. I learned the halls. I learned the when. I found the ways that got me through and stole back bits of time with you. As much as pain and drugs would spare, we took what little time was there. Not whole. Not long. Not what we planned. But real enough to hold your hand. I came the night before the end, held your hand, then sat again. I drew the promise I still owed while pain took you where I could not go. No one said no. I found the room. I sat with you and lost you slow. The end still came, as endings do. The halls stayed white. You could not stay.

@Fluffyparsnip @___TheGOOdWitch Lol, wrong example. Color usually means pigmentation. A sorta intrinsic property. The color of the sky is more an optical phenomena than an intrinsic property.

@silobv2891 @anpacaal85971 @___TheGOOdWitch The problem is not emotion. Seething is quite reasonable towards intentionally unreseasonable people. "Do you not know who I am?"... Peterson would take a bullet before saying the pen doesnt exist. And they'd require him to before believing he would.

@anpacaal85971 @___TheGOOdWitch I don’t think that’s what I’m doing at all. I think what he is saying is at the core of one understanding of the word “belief.” I said it because I wrestled it with myself. He deals in things that are not easy to articulate, especially seething through clenched teeth

Yes, I had a very severe reaction to my second Moderna shot. But part of being a responsible scientist with a large platform is not extrapolating my personal experience to the entire population. I also have a rare autoimmune condition called Parsonage-Turner syndrome (diagnosed in 2013), so I may have been particularly vulnerable to side effects. Who knows. Given my bad experience with the first mRNA vaccine I've ever taken, I have made the personal decision to avoid them in the future. However, it would have been incredibly unscientific and highly irresponsible of me to take this personal experience of mine and start telling millions of people online to not get vaccinated for COVID. There's a reason quack alternative medicine practitioners plaster personal testimonies all over their websites. They sound convincing to a lot of people. But it's purely manipulation. Personal testimony, even a large collection of them, isn't a substitute for real, population-level data. I am not an expert on vaccines, the COVID vaccine, or epidemiology in general. So when I experience a serious side effect taking something with a non-zero rate of serious side effects, I understand that my personal experience likely isn't an indication that we're all being lied to about safety. You should understand that as well. The impulse to extrapolate a very negative personal experience to the entire population is very strong. But responsible scientists, and especially those with large public platforms, should resist that impulse.

@japan_nobunaga Japan is also the most culturally cohesive nations in the world... For those that dont understand, people with shared values tend to get along much better, thus avoid conflict. The USA... the most diverse nation in the history of the world... thus high conflict and crime.

In Japan, almost no civilian owns a firearm. Not because the people are afraid of guns. Because the people, decades ago, decided that conflict ends at a conversation. Hunting license? Yes, with extensive training. Self-defense pistol? Effectively not permitted. A gun in a glove compartment, "just in case"? Unimaginable. Japan also averages fewer than 10 firearm homicides per year. Total. In a country of 124 million people. For comparison, the United States averages that number every 12 hours. Not because Japan is gentler by nature. Because Japan made a different bet: that the cost of a tense moment with no weapon is lower than the cost of an easy moment with one. Think about the last time a stranger raised their voice at you in your country. Think about whether you, or they, calculated what was in someone's waistband. Japan built a different argument. Not loaded. Not chambered. Just expected. Of everyone. Always. 🇯🇵

defenders of spanking will often do this motte and bailey fallacy where they argue that people who condemn spanking are equating "lightly slapping the wrist while calm" to "going berserk and beating your kids savagely with a weapon and drawing blood" the bailey argument they are making, which is what they actually think, is that parents should be allowed to physically hurt their kids. then they retreat to the easy to defend argument, which is "going crazy and beating your kids with weapons while your really upset all of the sudden and drawing blood from your kids isn't the same thing as lightly slapping your kids on the wrist" people who condemn spanking, are not arguing they are literally the same, they are saying lightly slapping your kid on the wrist is also bad, becuase the child doesn't understand why you hit them and it doesn't actually teach them that what they did is wrong, it just teaches them that you will hit them if they do that thing in front of you. they have to do this motte and bailey argument, because its much harder to just intellectually defend physically hurting your kids, thats why people will literally not even acknowledge that they are "hitting" their kids or "hurting" their kids and will use words like "discipline", they literally do not even want to acknowledge the literal reality of what they are doing, they are striking their kids to hurt their kids.

@BigthinkerBig @punished_bobda @quickdeletion @CristusVictor So for clarification...in your eyes, a guy who likes to abuse his kids by beating them...is the same as me, when my daughter was starting to explore as a toddler, and I would say "No", with slaps on her hand, as a way to discourage her from touching certain things

@TheBriefSheep @BigthinkerBig His argument is that all violence is wrong, and that the existence of different and higher severities of violence doesn't serve as a counterargument to claims that specific forms of violence are wrong. You are desperate to strawman this in order to protect your feelings.

@BigthinkerBig "Beating kids" directly implies abuse. Spanking is not strictly abuse. Tho, clearly you think otherwise.

@TheBriefSheep spanking kids is by definition, beating kids. Beat means to strike repeatedly or to hit something with force, often implying a series of blows.

@capitalist_qol @BigthinkerBig You explicitly conflated disciplinary as abuse. To be frank, I dont know how to explain to you that you lying about me abusing my kids makes you litterally an abusive gaslighter.

I never said discipline and abuse are the same thing, which you and I both know I never said nor implied. I get that you think lying is a valid tactic here, but unfortunately for you, leaving a history of what we each said makes it very easy to demonstrate that you're dishonest. It only works if it's not demonstrable. Anyway, don't hit your kids as a form of discipline. Not a difficult concept. Don't need to continue dodging the results of your own abusive beliefs if you just stop hitting your kids. You can do it, I believe in you.

@capitalist_qol @BigthinkerBig "Abuse is often displinary" is not the same thing as "displine is the same thing as abuse"... as you keep insisting. Please dont pretend like you have the mental discipline to have this conversation, you clearly dont.

@TheBriefSheep @BigthinkerBig Speaking of abusing definitions, you're lying. "Abuse" is not defined as "when you go past disciplinary". Abuse is often specifically disciplinary, and you're lying to say it's not in order to justify your priors on the topic. Disgusting, really.

I don't mean "abusive", I mean "disciplinary". Batting their hand away from something potentially dangerous is not a disciplinary action, it's a protective one. The discipline, if any is warranted, is a secondary action. If you hit their hand hard enough for *that* to be the disciplinary action, you're a piece of shit.
