I have to rely upon news reports about the civil case against Gerry Adams but from what I have read, I would say he has a reason to be concerned. I don't think the case went well for him. The legal team for the three claimants seem to have done a good job - calling the right sort of witnesses (even two from the grave) and they challenged Adams on some things I thought/hoped would cause him problems and they apparently did. Based upon the news reports, I think one of the worst moments for Adams came when he was challenged about his role in the 1972 secret talks in London. Bearing in mind that most (if not all) accounts of that meeting, say it was between representatives of the British government and members of the IRA leadership, and the IRA chief of staff who was at the meeting is on record that everyone on his delegation were IRA members, I don't think Adams managed to swerve around that one particularly well. It's odd that he didn't have a better answer prepared because even I was expecting that to come up. Having said all that, it comes down to what the judge thinks, not what I think. I also wouldn't rule out some legal technicality coming up. I don't count my chickens until they are hatched.

His contempt for the court is fairly clear. His admission that he wore a black beret, is more damaging than he thinks. His reference to Benny Hill is interesting. Adams believes he is funny and able to mock the Judicial process, instead of a man concerned with defending himself.
