Idk if I’ve ever truly had a sinking feeling about a tornado/severe season like this year. Not just because we have a lot of the right ingredients in place for a season with a few really big outbreaks, but the lay offs & funding cuts to NOAA & NWS makes us waaayyyy more vulnerable to the truly “big one” than we have been in a long time.

Tonight I sent a letter to Commerce Secretary Lutnick, urging him to exempt NWS from the federal hiring freeze due to the critical role the agency plays in public safety and supporting the economy, and protect all NOAA employees from firings or reduction in force initiatives that would jeopardize the safety of the American public.

Folks are getting worked up about my recent claim that U.S. National Weather Service costs $3-4 per person/year. Well, some math: NWS budget of ~$1.3 billion, ~160 million tax returns, & ~345 million Americans means ~$8/taxpayer, or (indeed) ~$3.75/person. That's...quite a deal.

Our office suddenly lost a great man last week, and not gonna lie, we are still pretty shocked at his loss 💔 Our ESA, Charles, was a great friend to everyone, a leader by example, easily made everyone laugh, and influenced so many. His loss leaves a huge hole in this world.

23-year-old Californian Alessandro Slebir may have broke the world record for largest wave ever surfed. The wave was part of the storm that demolished the Santa Cruz Wharf last month. The wave is believed to be 108 ft tall, according to Mavericks Rescue Team, which would beat the current record of 86-feet in Portugal held by Sebastian Steudtner. Judging official wave heights is pretty difficult. For Steudtner’s 86-foot wave, it took 18 months for Guinness World Records to give him the title. “Regardless of the number, it really doesn’t matter how big the wave was to me. It was really the biggest wave of my life and that’s all I really care about at the moment,” Slebir said, according to SFGate. The wave was caught at Mavericks near Half Moon Bay.
