The biggest reason why the NFL hasn’t had the tanking problem is few coaching staffs have the job security to believe they will ever get to work with the hypothetical high draft pick. Half of every roster is also too worried about their jobs week to week to put tanking film out
De’Vion Hinton@stilldexhinton

The reason the NFL doesn't have as big of a tanking problem is because the safety risks built into the game of football force a certain level of self-seriousness/competence at the low end that NBA basketball doesn't require.

@InHarmsWay19 Very. And the 49ers seem willing to hold him hostage all offseason and cut him after camp. Aiyuk has handled the situation badly, but spite also rarely proves a smart way to run a team. Guessing his head space is Washington is the only team he will accept prove it money from

Obviously this comes with the caveat of being able to create the cap space and sign the rookie class, the most interesting Free Agent the Chiefs could/should bring in is David Njoku

@JoeJHoyt But if he had just not signed the tag, he wouldn’t be subject to fines. There’s no reason to sign if you are willing to hold out because that’s just lighting money on fire.

One interesting note: CeeDee Lamb was on his rookie deal, which meant all the fines he accrued could be forgiven by the team, like they were. George Pickens, since he no longer is on his rookie deal, couldn’t have his fines reduced or waived by the team. Think Zack Martin 2023.

@Daily_Chiefs_ @hbtCHIEFS If Brashard makes the 53 man in August for a second year in a row, he will be the Chiefs’ first 6th/7th rounder to do so since Pacheco and Watson

I think Brashard being a draft pick (with how Veach/Reid treat their draft picks) he is 100% safe, plus he is PR/KR1. So that leaves Demercado as the RB that may be left off if a surprise shows up from UDFAs. He’s on a cheap contract, so it doesn’t affect the cap if he’s cut, and he’s in the EXACT spot that Elijah Mitchell was last season where everyone just expects him to get opportunity. Don’t forget, Andy is really slow bringing in guys that don’t know his offense and Brashard is the only RB that knows it currently.

The 3 RB's that are most likely to make the 53 are: Kenneth Walker Emmett Johnson Emari Demercado Brashard Smith is RB4 and active on gameday if he earns the starting PR/KR spot.
Daily Chiefs@Daily_Chiefs_

Hot take 🔥👀 I’m lower on Emari Demercado than most Talented player, but I view him more in that Elijah Mitchell tier — not a clear difference-maker Feels like an RB4/inactive most weeks… and if a UDFA pops, he could even be on the bubble 😬

@hbtCHIEFS @TupeloDylan Knowles just has the misfortune of the Chiefs drafting two DBs while McDonald appears firmly in the plans with no linebackers take

@TupeloDylan He didn't make the initial 53. Signed to their PS in August. He eventually worked his way onto the active roster in October though

LB Cooper McDonald worked his way up from a minicamp invite and eventually made the 53. I believe he was the only UDFA to make it. Rookie minicamp is this weekend. Lots of guys will aim to make a lasting impression. I wonder who it will be this year?
Matt Derrick@mattderrick

LB Cooper McDonald from TCU has signed with the Chiefs' 90-player roster, per source. He's the third minicamp tryout player to sign with the Chiefs, along with S Major Williams and WR Jimmy Holiday. I expect a couple more signings are possible.

@Arrowhead_Adam Brashard Smith is easy to figure out. Either he separates from the pack of return game hopefuls and hangs on in a gadget role or he loses his job. I don’t think it matters if he’s listed at WR or RB. He has to be the top returner to factor into anything

@DMacWake316 Becoming probably the best player of the 2022 draft really made people forget the Jordyn Tyson level injury panic Stingley had coming out of LSU

@jessenewell Love your stuff but think the biggest question about the specialists easily is if Butker can rebound. I was wondering if the Chiefs would add a UDFA kicker to push him after seeing the pressure approach work for Araiza last year

@ArrowheadLive Would have ranked Delane third behind Gardner and Gonzalez. Stingley’s became a stud but I feel better taking Delane than I would have Stingley at the time in 2022 because of the injury risk he entered with. Obviously that would change now

@BKLando_ Cole Christiansen has literally never played a defensive snap for KC. All special teams, usually as a replacement when injury forced an existing special teamer is needed as an injury replacement on defense. Also appears to have no career penalties. He’s never been the problem.

@RichOToole At the one on southside Dallas I once saw Roger Creager drink so much through the show he forgot the lyrics to one of the last songs he sang. Was happy to see it looked like he was taking better care of himself last time we went to one of his shows.

@Slack4Tim I don’t think they need to consult Jones before restructuring. The unknown with him is over half of his money for the 2026 cap comes via a roster bonus that may or may not have already been paid. If they’ve already paid him that, there’s not much left to restructure

I have the Chiefs needing $10.165 million in top 51 cap space to sign Mansoor Delane, Peter Woods, R. Mason Thomas and Jadon Canady. Chiefs currently have less than $7 million in cap space. Contracts for Emmett Johnson, Cyrus Allen and Garrett Nussmeier will fall outside top 51
