@elizabethm46248 "It was expected" is pretty much the definition of a dress code. If you're calling me "son" you must be well into your nineties, so you should be able to remember. You aren't giving that impression.

For the second time, because idiots never learn: this is not a portrait of a British woman. It is a painting of a Belgian woman. It was the fashion in Benelux countries at the time for rich women to wear huge amounts of fabric on their heads and bodies to show off their wealth.

@simongerman600 @peterfrankopan Hmm, anyone know if the U.K. actually consumes more curry, pizza or Chinese takeaway than Fish n Chips? 🤔 collectively yes, but as separate dishes?

@REasther @WKCosmo Bayes is only relevant to someone who accepts the*facts* of the result. Reject the methodology maybe consistent with Thomas Kuhn's normal science, or Feyeraben's anything goes.

One way to tell your science is taking a back seat to your ideology is if you reflexively and selectively dismiss any study that disagrees with your already established conclusion, while still claiming that you are on the side of scientific consensus.

@Mobell_k @viennoiscafe If OnlyFans refutes any economic theory, it refutes the marginalist theory of market prices. What is the marginal cost of some simulated sexual act?

@OurWton Pavement by the roadworks on Darlington Street an absolute disgrace. Shopkeepers on this stretch say contractors won't be coming back to finish off for months. At the moment it's passable with difficulty for able bodied people.

Apropos of nothing 🤨the recorded data on female darts players is woeful. Like, I just want to know what weight their darts are. What do I get? Whether men on forums think they are fat or not.

@RichardBratby "Walsall lad" - the family moved to Stourbridge when he was two, then moved again to London while he was still young, eight if I remember correctly. The only Punch writer who did snap and crackle was Alan Coren.

Feeling terrible about the fact that I am simply not clicking with Jerome K Jerome despite the fact that we ought to rub along splendidly & also that he is a Walsall lad. The baggy, rambling type of humorous narrative just doesn't do it for me, it seems. I crave snap & crackle.

I think the biggest political problem with this issue is that regular people foundationally just don't think the empirical claims being made by the advocates for trans rights, about the ability to change one's gender, are true.
Lakshya Jain@lxeagle17

The trans rights backlash is extremely real and very worrying for progressives. The public is aligned with conservatives on several issues like sports, restrooms, and minors' access to care. It's possibly the worst issue for progressives I've ever polled. theargumentmag.com/p/the-trans-ri…

One remarkable thing about the hard right discourse about the destruction of the rules based order, and their welcoming it as the simultaneous destruction of hated liberalism and leftism, is the extent to which it relies on what was originally the leftist critique of liberalism.

@FondOfBeetles There's a website (L-Space??) with very detailed but still incomplete catalogues of them. Was mostly compiled from comments of fans on Usenet when that was a thing, so tends to tail off for the later books. TP occasionally contributed to the Usenet group, confirming Easter eggs.

After the 2019 Corbyn defeat, I took annual leave and went to stay with my parents at their home in rural southern Virginia to knock doors for Bernie. I didn’t grow up there. I didn’t use the Bernie app. I just knocked every door. What I found was simple: Trump voters were far more open to Bernie than liberal Buttigieg or Klobuchar voters. Because politics isn’t a line from Trump to Bernie with the “sensible centre” in between. The centre is the status quo. The right and left both challenge it, for worse or for better. And it’s easier to move people from the right to the left than from the centre to anywhere at all.
More Perfect Union@MorePerfectUS

NEW: A full 10% of NYC Trump voters turned around and voted for Zohran Mamdani. So we went to talk to them. These voters are done with the status quo. One New Yorker told us: "As Americans, we can realize it's not Republican versus Democrat. It's more of like a class war."

You can tell when a man has never been friends with a woman because he says stuff like 'men fantasise about saving people and using super powers/time travel for good though' and 'men talk about ethics and morality and important stuff together, unlike women'
